The Four Tops performed exclusively live at the Platengala (Record Gala) in the Netherlands recorded by AVRO Television. This program was recorded live from the Ahoy-hall in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on 15 October 1982. The Four Tops are an American vocal quartet from Detroit, Michigan who helped to define the city's Motown sound of the 1960s. The group's repertoire has included soul music, R&B, disco, adult contemporary, doo-wop, jazz, and show tunes. Founded as the Four Aims, lead singer Levi Stubbs, Abdul "Duke" Fakir, Renaldo "Obie" Benson and Lawrence Payton remained together for over four decades, performing from 1953 until 1997 without a change in personnel. The Four Tops were among a number of groups, including the Miracles, the Marvelettes, Martha and the Vandellas, the Temptations, and the Supremes, who established the Motown Sound heard around the world during the 1960s. They were notable for having Stubbs, a baritone, as their lead singer, whereas most other male and mixed vocal groups of the time were fronted by tenors. The group was the main male vocal group for the highly successful songwriting and production team of Holland–Dozier–Holland, who crafted a stream of hit singles for Motown. These included two Billboard Hot 100 number-one hits for the Tops: "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" in 1965 and "Reach Out I'll Be There" in 1966. The group continued to have chart singles into the 1970s, including the million-seller "Ain't No Woman" (1973). The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. Spargo are a Dutch band, formed in 1975, known for their hits "You and Me", "Head Up to the Sky", "One Night Affair", "Just For You" and "Hip Hap Hop" in the 1980s. Spargo was formed by Ruud Mulder, Hans Elbersen (both of whom had played in the blues rock group Space 7), Ellert Driessen, Jef Nassenstein and Leander Lammertink. Elbersen left the band and in 1979 American singer Lilian Day Jackson, stepdaughter of jazz drummer Art Blakley, joined. With Jackson and Driessen as lead vocalists, the band got its distinctive sound and got its breakthrough. In 1980, the single "You and Me" topped the charts in the Netherlands and also became the best-selling record there in 1980. The single was also very successful across Europe, in Belgium, Germany, Iceland and Sweden. Between August 1980 and March 1982, Spargo achieved four more top-5 hits in the Netherlands, but the success of "You and Me" was not to be equalled. Between October 1982 and March 1984, the band achieved a further 4 top-40 hits, but none were as successful as their previous singles. 'Goodbye' reached No 29 in the Dutch Top 40 on 8 januari 1983. Doe Maar is a Dutch pop group that combined influences from ska, punk and reggae to create their own Nederpop sound. The band originally existed from 1978 to 1984. The success with the predominantly youthful fans and the frenzied public reactions of especially young teenage girls regularly led to comparisons with Beatlemania. From a first reunion in 2000 (with a new album), Doe Maar occasionally meets for concert series (2008, 2012, 2013, 2016–2017, 2018). The first line-up from June 1978 was Ernst Jansz, vocals and keys; Jan Hendriks, guitar; Carel Copier, drums and Piet Dekker, vocals and bass guitar. Joost Belinfante (ex-CCC Inc. and Slumberlandband) temporarily played bass guitar between February and August 1980. Solution were a Dutch progressive rock band that existed from 1970 to 1983, during which time they released six studio albums and one live album. They incorporated jazz, rock, pop and soul influences, becoming more commercial on their fifth and sixth albums. 'Runaway' is the sixth and last studio album by the Dutch rock group Solution. It was released in 1982 on CBS Records. Jim Capaldi of Traffic co-produced the album with the band. Capaldi also wrote or co-wrote the lyrics to seven of the eight songs. He covered two of the songs, "Runaway" and "Bad Breaks", on his next solo album, Fierce Heart. The album 'Runaway' entered the chart in the Netherlands on 13 March 1982, reaching #14 and spending 9 weeks on the chart. The title track was also a hit when released as a single. Today, October 2, 2021, is the 75th birthday of Romina Power. Congratulations Romina! "Sharazan" is a song by Italian duo Al Bano and Romina Power, released in 1981. It was an international commercial success and remains one of their best-known hits. Al Bano (real name: Albano Carrisi) was born on May 20, 1943 in Cellino San Marco, Italy, and made his debut as a singer in 1966. In 1970 he married Romina Power (October 2, 1951), an Italian / American actress and singer. The duo is particularly popular in Italy and Germany. They attended the 1976 Eurovision Song Contest, where they represented Italy with the song 'No Lo Rivivremo Di Nuevo' (We'll Live It All Again). They finished seventh of the 18 participating countries. In the summer of 1976, the French version of the song, entitled 'T'aimer Encore Une Fois', appeared in the Dutch Tipparade. In 1982 they scored a top 10 hit in the Netherlands with 'Felicità', a song that reached second place at the famous San Remo festival that year. The successor 'Sharazan' reached # 9 in the Top 40 a few weeks later. The duo primarily recorded in Italian but have also released a great number of records in Spanish and French. They participated twice in Eurovision Song Contest in 1975 and 1985 and performed five times at Sanremo Music Festival, winning in 1984 with the song "Ci sarà". The couple also shot seven films, based on their songs, between 1967 and 1984. The two separated and divorced in 1999, but reunited professionally in 2013 and their comeback gig at Moscow Crocus City Hall grossed 10 million euros. Sinterklaas is one of the sources of the popular Christmas icon of Santa Claus. This performance of the two singers of popgroup 'Het Goede Doel' was a big hit when it was released preceding the Sinterklaas feast in December 1982 in the Netherlands. Crimson And Clover was a big hit for Tommy James & The Shondells in the 1960's. It was recored by Joan Jett (born Joan Marie Larkin, September 22, 1958), the American rock singer, songwriter, composer, record producer and actress that became known with her group The Blackhearts after she left the all girl group The Runaways. The Runaways had a massive hit with the song "Cherry Bomb". The Blackhearts' version of the song "I Love Rock 'n Roll" was # 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks in 1982. Nova was a Dutch electronic music band, who reached the number 1 position in the Dutch Top 40 in 1982 with the instrumental "Aurora". The group consisted of Rob Papen, Ruud van Es and Peter Kommers. Later in 1982, the group scored another hit called "Sol". The three members of the band also performed under the name Peru. Nova was the "commercial" branch of Peru. After Nova's success, the group went on as Peru. Using this name, the group had another modest hit in the Dutch single charts with the song "Africa". Rob Papen and Ruud van Es are still active in producing music, albeit no longer under the names Nova nor Peru. "Aurora" originated as a theme from a Peru song called "Sons of Dawn". Willem van Kooten, former director of the record company Red Bullet, discovered the song and, with help from producer Chris Pilgram, helped make it a number-1 hit in the Netherlands and the definitive breakthrough for both Nova and Peru. Kool & the Gang is an American band formed in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1964 by brothers Robert "Kool" Bell and Ronald Bell, with Dennis "D.T." Thomas, Robert "Spike" Mickens, Charles Smith, George Brown, and Ricky West. They have undergone numerous changes in personnel and have explored many musical styles throughout their history, including jazz, soul, funk, rock, and pop music. After settling on their name following several changes, the group signed to De-Lite Records and released their debut album, Kool and the Gang (1970). The band's first taste of success came with the release of their fourth album Wild and Peaceful (1973), which contained the US top-ten singles "Jungle Boogie" and "Hollywood Swinging". Kool & the Gang subsequently entered a period of decline before they reached a second commercial peak between 1979 and 1986 following their partnership with Brazilian musician/producer Eumir Deodato and the addition of singer James "J.T." Taylor to the line-up. Their most successful albums of this period include Ladies' Night (1979), Celebrate! (1980), and Emergency (1984), their highest selling album with two million copies sold in the US. Their hit singles during this period included "Ladies' Night", the US number one "Celebration", "Get Down on It", "Joanna", "Misled", and "Cherish". The band continues to perform worldwide, including as support for Van Halen in 2012 and their fiftieth-anniversary tour in 2014. Initially an experimental electronic outfit, the group signed to Virgin Records in 1979 and later attained widespread commercial success with their third album Dare in 1981. The album contained four hit singles, including the UK/US number one hit "Don't You Want Me." The band received the Brit Award for Best British Breakthrough Act in 1982. Further hits followed throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, including "Mirror Man," "(Keep Feeling) Fascination," "The Lebanon," "Human" (a US No. 1) and "Tell Me When." The only constant band member since 1977 has been lead singer and songwriter Philip Oakey. Keyboard players Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh both left the band in 1980 to form Heaven 17. Under Oakey's leadership, the Human League then evolved into a commercially successful New Pop band with a new line-up including female vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley. Since the mid-1990s, the band has essentially been a trio of Oakey, Catherall and Sulley with various sidemen. This single 'Don't You Want Me' reached #5 in the Dutch Top 40 on 30 January 1982. Henry John Deutschendorf Jr. (December 31, 1943 – October 12, 1997)[3], known professionally as John Denver, was an American singer-songwriter, record producer, actor, activist, and humanitarian, whose greatest commercial success was as a solo singer. In the 1970s, he was one of the most popular acoustic artists of the decade and one of its best-selling artists. By 1974, he was one of America's best-selling performers, and AllMusic has described Denver as "among the most beloved entertainers of his era". Denver recorded and released approximately 300 songs, about 200 of which he composed. He had 33 albums and singles that were certified Gold and Platinum in the U.S by RIAA certification with estimated sales of more than 33 million units. He recorded and performed primarily with an acoustic guitar and sang about his joy in nature, his disdain for city life, his enthusiasm for music, and his relationship trials. Doe Maar is a Dutch pop group that combined influences from ska, punk and reggae to create their own Nederpop sound. The band originally existed from 1978 to 1984. The success with the predominantly youthful fans and the frenzied public reactions of especially young teenage girls regularly led to comparisons with Beatlemania. From a first reunion in 2000 (with a new album), Doe Maar occasionally meets for concert series (2008, 2012, 2013, 2016–2017, 2018). The first line-up from June 1978 was Ernst Jansz, vocals and keys; Jan Hendriks, guitar; Carel Copier, drums and Piet Dekker, vocals and bass guitar. Joost Belinfante (ex-CCC Inc. and Slumberlandband) temporarily played bass guitar between February and August 1980.
