On August 21, 2021 we received the sad news that Don Everly of The Everly Brothers passed away. Don Everly, 84, died at his home in Nashville. He formed the legendary rock and roll duo The Everly Brothers with his brother Phil. This exclusive live video is the YouTube premiere of the concert the Everly Brothers did in 1984 in the Netherlands. Rest in peace, Don! The Everly Brothers were an American country-influenced rock and roll duo, known for steel-string acoustic guitar playing and close harmony singing. Consisting of Isaac Donald "Don" Everly (born February 1, 1937 - August 21, 2021) and Phillip "Phil" Jason Everly (January 19, 1939 – January 3, 2014), the duo was raised in a musical family, first appearing on radio singing along with their father Ike Everly and mother Margaret Everly as "The Everly Family" in the 1940s. The brothers enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1961, and their output dropped off, though additional hit singles continued through 1962, with "That's Old Fashioned (That's the Way Love Should Be)" being their last top-10 hit. Miami Sound Machine - Dr. Beat - 15-10-1984 • TopPop
Miami Sound Machine was an American band of Latin-influenced music that had featured the vocals of Cuban-born recording artist Gloria Estefan (née Fajardo). Established in 1975 by Emilio Estefan Jr., the band was originally known as the Miami Latin Boys before becoming the Miami Sound Machine in 1977. The band had a number of albums and a string of hit singles until 1989. The band's 1985 album Primitive Love credited the band whereas their follow-up album Let It Loose in 1987 placed Gloria Estefan at the forefront. From 1988-1989, the latter album was also repackaged as Anything For You with new cover art with the international release in Europe, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand. In 1989, the group's name ceased being included on the CD or album products—as Estefan continued as a solo artist. This is their first hit worldwide and their first chart entry in the Netherlands in October 1984. This long lost Toppop performance, of which only this short versionof just over one minute has survived, was first broadcast on October 15, 1984. Meat Loaf - Modern Girl (1984) • TopPop
R.I.P Meat Loaf. Yesterday, January 20, 2022, Meat Loaf has died at the age of 74. The news was confirmed on the star's Facebook page by his family. "Our hearts are broken to announce that the incomparable Meat Loaf passed away tonight with his wife Deborah by his side," a message read. The Bat Out of Hell star sold 100 million albums worldwide and appeared in movies like Fight Club, the Rocky Horror Picture Show and Wayne's World. American composer and songwriter Jim Steinman has passed away at the age of 73, today 19 April 2021. Steinman is best known for his collaboration with Meat Loaf. With him he experienced his greatest success with the huge hit Paradise by the Dashboard Light. Michael Lee Aday (born Marvin Lee Aday; September 27, 1947), better known by his stage name Meat Loaf, is an American musician, singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor. He is noted for his powerful, wide-ranging operatic voice and theatrical live shows. His 'Bat Out of Hell' trilogy of albums (consisting of Bat Out of Hell, Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell, and Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose) has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide. Almost 40 years after its release, Bat Out of Hell still sells an estimated 200,000 copies annually and stayed on the charts for over nine years, making it one of the best selling albums in history. 'Bad Attitude' is the fourth studio album by Meat Loaf and was released in November 1984. Recorded in England, it features two songs by Jim Steinman, both previously recorded, and a duet with Roger Daltrey. According to Meat Loaf's autobiography, he approached Steinman about writing the entire album, but waiting for new songs wound up taking so long that Meat Loaf recorded two previously released Steinman songs and moved on with other writers.[2] The album concentrates more on the hard rock side of Meat Loaf, was a minor success around the globe and released a few hit singles, the most successful being "Modern Girl". 'Modern Girl' was the first single of the 1984 'Bad Attitude' album, which also included two Jim Steinman songs. It reached #41 in the US charts and #17 in the UK charts. Nena - Fragezeichen (1984) • TopPop
Gabriele Susanne Kerner (born 24 March 1960), better known as Nena, is a German singer-songwriter, actress, and comedian who rose to international fame in 1983 as the eponymous lead vocalist of the band Nena with the Neue Deutsche Welle song "99 Luftballons". In the same year the band re-recorded this song in English as "99 Red Balloons". Nena's re-recording of some of the band's old hit songs as a solo artist, produced by the co-composer of most of them, her former Nena band colleague and keyboard player Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen, rekindled her solo career in 2002. Combined with the success of the Nena band years, she has sold over 25 million records, making her one of Germany's most successful music artists. This Toppop recording of 'Fragezeichen' (German for 'question mark') was first broadcast on January 5, 1984. The single reached #12 in the Dutch Top 40 in January 1984. The Everly Brothers - On The Wings Of A Nightingale - Platengala 1984 - 13-10-1984 • TopPop
'On the Wings of a Nightingale' is a single by The Everly Brothers written by Paul McCartney. This was the opening song of the Everly Brothers' reunion album EB '84. It was written by Paul McCartney specifically for this album. The production is by Dave Edmunds. This single was the brothers' last hit. This performance was recorded on 13 October 1984. Exactly on that day 'On The Wings Of A Nightingale' reached #4 in the Dutch Top 40, the highest chart position anywhere. The Everly Brothers were an American country-influenced rock and roll duo, known for steel-string acoustic guitar playing and close harmony singing. Consisting of Isaac Donald "Don" Everly (born February 1, 1937) and Phillip "Phil" Jason Everly (January 19, 1939 – January 3, 2014), the duo was raised in a musical family, first appearing on radio singing along with their father Ike Everly and mother Margaret Everly as "The Everly Family" in the 1940s. When the brothers were still in high school, they gained the attention of prominent Nashville musicians like Chet Atkins, who began to groom them for national attention. They began writing and recording their own music in 1956, and their first hit song came in 1957, with "Bye Bye Love", written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. The song hit number 1 in the spring of 1957, and additional hits would follow through 1958, many of them written by the Bryants, including "Wake Up Little Susie", "All I Have to Do Is Dream", and "Problems". In 1960, they signed with the major label Warner Bros. Records and recorded "Cathy's Clown", written by the brothers themselves, which was their biggest selling single. The brothers enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1961, and their output dropped off, though additional hit singles continued through 1962, with "That's Old Fashioned (That's the Way Love Should Be)" being their last top-10 hit. In October 1984 the Everly Brothers visited the Netherlands to headline the annual Dutch television show 'AVRO's Platengala'. Their single 'On The Wings Of A Nightingale' reached its highest position of #4 in the in the Dutch Top 10 on that very day, 13 October 1984. Their album 'EB'84' was on its way to the 6th position in the Album top 100 and achieved the gold status. This performance was taped at the Platen Gala, 13 October 1984 recorded in the Ahoy Hall, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. This is a prerecorded version. The live version has been released! Spargo are a Dutch band, formed in 1975, known for their hits "You and Me", "Head Up to the Sky", "One Night Affair", "Just For You" and "Hip Hap Hop" in the 1980s. Spargo was formed by Ruud Mulder, Hans Elbersen (both of whom had played in the blues rock group Space 7), Ellert Driessen, Jef Nassenstein and Leander Lammertink. Elbersen left the band and in 1979 American singer Lilian Day Jackson, stepdaughter of jazz drummer Art Blakley, joined. With Jackson and Driessen as lead vocalists, the band got its distinctive sound and got its breakthrough. In 1980, the single "You and Me" topped the charts in the Netherlands and also became the best-selling record there in 1980. The single was also very successful across Europe, in Belgium, Germany, Iceland and Sweden. Between August 1980 and March 1982, Spargo achieved four more top-5 hits in the Netherlands, but the success of "You and Me" was not to be equalled. Between October 1982 and March 1984, the band achieved a further 4 top-40 hits, but none were as successful as their previous singles. Frida - Shine - (live) Platengala 1984 • TopPop
Princess Anni-Frid, Dowager Countess of Plauen (née Lyngstad; born 15 November 1945), better known by her nickname Frida, is a Norwegian-Swedish singer, songwriter and environmentalist. She is best known as one of the founding members and lead singers of the Swedish pop band ABBA. Frida recorded two albums after ABBA split up in the early 1980's: 'Something's Going On' in 1982 and 'Shine' in 1984. 'Shine' features songwriting contributions from musicians such as Stuart Adamson, Kirsty MacColl, Simon Climie (of Climie Fisher fame), and Pete Glenister – Alison Moyet's co-writer and producer. The Shine album is also unique as it saw the debut of Lyngstad as a songwriter in both "Don't Do It" and "That's Tough", the latter also features her son Hans Fredriksson as co-writer. (Frida also wrote "I Don't Wanna Be Alone" during this period). The track "Slowly" was written by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of ABBA. This is the last commercially released song written by the ABBA composers to be recorded by either of ABBA's female vocalists to date. The lead single from the album was the title track, "Shine". In some countries "Twist in the Dark", "Come to Me (I Am Woman)" and "Heart of the Country" were released as singles. Shine reached the Top 10 on the album charts in Sweden, Norway and Belgium, and the Top 20 in the Netherlands. This is a live recording of Frida's performance at the Platengala 1984 in the Netherlands, October 1984. Watch our great music videos ❯ https://goo.gl/feVLNN More TopPop?
