Kim Wilde (born Kim Smith; 18 November 1960) is an English pop singer, author, DJ and television presenter. She first saw success in 1981 with her debut single "Kids in America", which reached number two in the UK. In 1983, she received the Brit Award for Best British Female solo artist. In 1986, she had a UK number two hit with a reworked version of the Supremes' song "You Keep Me Hangin' On", which also topped the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1987. Between 1981 and 1996, she had 25 singles reach the Top 50 of the UK singles chart. Her other hits include "Chequered Love" (1981), "You Came" (1988) and "Never Trust a Stranger" (1988). Icehouse is a rock band from Sydney, formed in 1977. Initially known in Australia for their pub-rock style, the band later achieved mainstream success playing new-wave and synthpop music and attained Top 10 singles chart success locally and in both Europe and the U.S. The mainstay of both Flowers and Icehouse has been Iva Davies (singer-songwriter, record producer, guitar, bass, keyboards, oboe) supplying additional musicians as required. The name "Icehouse", adopted in 1981, comes from an old, cold flat Davies lived in and the strange building across the road populated by itinerant people. Dalida - Pour Te Dire Je T'aime (1985) • TopPop
Today, May 3, 2022, we commemorate Dalida on the day she unfortunately died 35 years ago on May 3, 1987 Iolanda Cristina Gigliotti (17 January 1933 – 3 May 1987), professionally known as Dalida, was an Italian-Egyptian and French singer and actress, born in Egypt to Italian parents. Her diverse repertoire and heartfelt interpretations of both sentimental ballads and pop music brought her adoration by mass audiences and by politicians and intellectuals alike. In the early 1960s, Dalida was already household name in francophonie and the leading singer in Europe, and in 1964 she was awarded the first platinum disc in history. Dalida lined up new successes; "La danse de Zorba", "Il silenzio", "Bang bang", "Ciao amore ciao" and "Le temps des fleurs", which she sang at concerts around the world, spending two-thirds of each year on tour. In 1970, Dalida became independent by founding her own record label, and continued success was guaranteed with a song "Darla dirladada". It was followed with some of the most notable French songs, "Paroles, paroles", "Je suis malade", "Gigi l'amoroso" and "Il venait d'avoir 18 ans". In the second half of the 1970s, Dalida brought disco to Europe with the song "J'attendrai" and established herself as the Reine du Disco ("Disco Queen" in French) with the songs "Besame mucho", "Génération 78" and "Laissez-moi danser". At the same time in the Middle East she leads with the raï megahits "Salma Ya Salama" and "Helwa ya baladi", the latter becoming the unofficial anthem of Egypt. 'Pour Te Dire Je T'Aime' is a cover version of "I Just Called to Say I Love You", a ballad written, produced, and performed by American R&B singer and songwriter Stevie Wonder. It was a major international hit, and remains Wonder's best-selling single to date, having topped a record 19 charts. Willy DeVille, (born William Paul Borsey Jr.; August 25, 1950 – August 6, 2009) was an American singer and songwriter. We was singer and leader of Mink DeVille (1974–1986), a rock band known for its association with early punk rock bands at New York's CBGB nightclub and for being a showcase for the music of Willy DeVille. The band recorded six albums in the years 1977 to 1985. Except for frontman Willy DeVille, the original members of the band played only on the first two albums (Cabretta and Return to Magenta). For the remaining albums and for tours, Willy DeVille assembled musicians to play under the name Mink DeVille. After 1985, when Willy DeVille began recording and touring under his own name, his backup bands were sometimes called "The Mink DeVille Band," an allusion to the earlier Mink DeVille. The Associates (or simply Associates) were a Scottish post-punk and pop band, formed in Dundee in 1979 by singer Billy Mackenzie and guitarist Alan Rankine. The group first gained recognition after releasing an unauthorized cover of David Bowie's "Boys Keep Swinging" as their debut single in 1979, which landed them a contract with Fiction Records. They followed with their debut album 'The Affectionate Punch' in 1980 and the singles collection 'Fourth Drawer Down' in 1981, both to critical praise. They achieved commercial success in 1982 with the UK Top 10 album 'Sulk' and UK Top 20 singles "Party Fears Two" and "Club Country", during which time they were associated with the New Pop movement. Rankine left the group that year, leaving MacKenzie to record under the Associates name until 1990. They briefly reunited in 1993. Perhaps is the third studio album by Scottish post-punk and new wave band the Associates, released on 9 February 1985 by WEA. It is their first album without founding member, keyboardist and guitarist Alan Rankine. It reached #6 in the Dutch Tipparade on 30 March 1985. Living In A Box - Living In A Box • TopPop
Living in a Box is a British band founded in 1985. They are best known for their eponymous debut single, produced by Richard James Burgess. The group currently consists of founding members Anthony "Tich" Critchlow (drums) and Marcus Vere (synthesizers) along with vocalist Kenny Thomas. Living in a Box were formed in 1985 in Manchester. The group named themselves after the first song they had recorded together in the studio. It was in fact this song that had brought them together in the first place. Vere and Critchlow were recording the demo version of the tune in a studio also being visited by Richard Darbyshire, an independent recording artist at the time. Richard was invited to join his two future bandmates in the studio to record vocals for the track, and the three officially became a band. Released two years later, "Living in a Box" was their most commercially successful single, peaking at #5 on the UK Singles Chart and became the band's only single to chart in the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 in the US. Kajagoogoo - White Feathers (1985) • TopPop
Kajagoogoo were a British new wave band, best known for their 1983 hit single "Too Shy", which reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart, and the Top 10 in numerous other countries. The band signed with EMI Records in July 1982 after Limahl had met keyboardist Nick Rhodes of the group Duran Duran while working as a waiter at London's Embassy Club. Rhodes proceeded to co-produce the band's first single, "Too Shy" with Duran Duran's EMI producer Colin Thurston. After being the support act for the Birmingham band Fashion in late 1982, Kajagoogoo embarked on their own headlining White Feathers tour in Spring 1983. Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer and actress. She is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with sales of over 200 million records worldwide. Houston's vocal performances, as well as her prominence on the MTV and popular music charts, have influenced many African American artists. Houston began singing in church as a child and became a background vocalist while in high school. She was one of the first black women to appear on the cover of Seventeen magazine after becoming a teen model in 1981. With the guidance of Arista Records chairman Clive Davis, Houston signed to the label at age 19. Her first two studio albums, Whitney Houston (1985) and Whitney (1987), both peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and are among the best-selling albums of all time. She is the only artist to have seven consecutive number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, from "Saving All My Love for You" in 1985 to "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" in 1988. This single did not get a release or chartposition in any other European country or chart. This performance in TROS' Formula One tv-program on March 25, 1985 was one of Whitney's very first rare performances in the Netherlands, the first in Whitney's career.
