Far Corporation - Stairway to Heaven (1985) • TopPop 05:32
Far Corporation - Stairway to Heaven (1985) • TopPop
Far Corporation were a multi-national band created by German record producer Frank Farian, who created the bands Boney M. and Milli Vanilli. The name was shortened from "Frank Farian Corporation", which was originally put together to record a cover of the Paul Simon piece "Mother and Child Reunion" as a charity record and reached the top 10 in several European countries. That group's lineup included members of Barclay James Harvest, Toto, Boney M and Force Majeure. Far Corporation's primary claim to fame is their cover of "Stairway to Heaven". Contrary to public perception, Far Corporation was actually the first group to make the singles charts with this song as Led Zeppelin had never released it as a single. In fact, it was the only version of the song that charted on the US Billboard Hot 100, reaching #89. Some of the musicians Farian assembled included vocalist Robin McAuley, vocalist Henry Gorman, drummers Curt Cress and Peter Bold and three members of Toto: vocalist Bobby Kimball, keyboardist David Paich, and guitarist Steve Lukather. Far Corporation released its first album Division One in 1985 on IMP/ATCO Records and their cover of "Stairway to Heaven" reached #8 on the UK Singles Chart. It also reached #9 in Ireland and the following year peaked at #16 in South Africa and number 23 in Australia. This single reached no 18 in the Dutch Top 40 on February 4, 1986 Watch our great music videos ❯ https://goo.gl/feVLNN More TopPop? Whitney Houston - How Will I Know (1985) • TopPop 03:40
Whitney Houston - How Will I Know (1985) • TopPop
Very rare first performance in the Netherlands of the then 21 year old Whitney Houston in the AVRO TV program ‘Plaza’. This was, together with her first TopPop appearance with her single ‘All At Once’, from her debut album ‘Whitney Houston’, her first visit abroad and the first in the Netherlands. See for this clip the TopPop channel. She sang at this TV show to a backing track before a live audience. This was her second single in the Netherlands (3rd in the USA) from the album and was only released in the USA in November of 1985. So this might well be her debut of this single on TV. The single reached #1 in the charts in the USA and canada, #2 in Sweden , #5 in the UK and #15 in the Netherlands. Whitney Elizabeth Houston (August 9, 1963 – February 11, 2012) was an American singer and actress. She is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with sales of over 200 million records worldwide. Houston's vocal performances, as well as her prominence on the MTV and popular music charts, have influenced many African American artists. Houston began singing in church as a child and became a background vocalist while in high school. She was one of the first black women to appear on the cover of Seventeen magazine after becoming a teen model in 1981. With the guidance of Arista Records chairman Clive Davis, Houston signed to the label at age 19. Her first two studio albums, Whitney Houston (1985) and Whitney (1987), both peaked at number one on the Billboard 200 and are among the best-selling albums of all time. She is the only artist to have seven consecutive number-one singles on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, from "Saving All My Love for You" in 1985 to "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" in 1988. Houston's third studio album, I'm Your Baby Tonight (1990), was certified quintuple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and yielded two Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles, the title track "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and "All the Man That I Need". Kajagoogoo were a British new wave band, best known for their 1983 hit single "Too Shy", which reached No. 1 in the UK Singles Chart, and the Top 10 in numerous other countries. The band signed with EMI Records in July 1982 after Limahl had met keyboardist Nick Rhodes of the group Duran Duran while working as a waiter at London's Embassy Club. Rhodes proceeded to co-produce the band's first single, "Too Shy" with Duran Duran's EMI producer Colin Thurston. The single was released on 10 January 1983 and topped the UK Singles Chart, having done so before any of Duran Duran's singles (as Rhodes himself has lightheartedly noted). Follow-up singles "Ooh to Be Aah" and "Hang on Now" also both reached the UK Top 20, and the group's debut album 'White Feathers' reached No. 5 in the UK Albums Chart. After being the support act for the Birmingham band Fashion in late 1982, Kajagoogoo embarked on their own headlining White Feathers tour in Spring 1983.
In 1987 verscheen de single I Want You (To Be My Baby). Deze plaat haalde de tipparade. De Gigantjes stopten in 1999 nadat zangeres Mieke Stemerdink de band verliet voor een solocarrière. English: De Gigantjes were founded as an informal occasional orchestra around Rob Kruisman and Arti Kraayeveld. Both previously played with Carlsberg. With the exception of singer Mieke Stemerdink, all band members were routiners within Nederpop, such as pianist Willem Hagen, bassist Robert Brondsema and Drummer Bart Terlaak and successors Mike Meier and Bob Dros. The band's later drummer was Marcel Schmidt. In 1985 they reached 23rd place in the Dutch Top 40 with their single Yaki taki oowah! The Gigantjes stopped in 1999 after singer Mieke Stemerdink left the band for a solo career in 2008. Watch our great music videos ❯ https://goo.gl/feVLNN More TopPop? Double - The Captain Of Her Heart (1985) • TopPop
Now that Switzerland have beaten the French team in Euro 2020 and thus reached the quarter finals, we publish this Swiss hit from 1985, the first Swiss act to reach the Top 40 of the Billboard chart. "The Captain of Her Heart" is a song by the Swiss duo Double (Felix Haug and Kurt Maloo) from their debut studio album, Blue (1985). The song is a ballad about a woman who stops waiting for her absent lover to return. The single was an international success, reaching No. 8 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 16 on the Billboard Hot 100, thus making Double the first Swiss act to reach the top 40 on the latter chart. In the Netherlands it reached number 11 in the Dutch Tipparde on 14 December 1985. In a retrospective review of the song, AllMusic journalist Stewart Mason suggested that the song is "one of the great lost one-hit wonders of the mid-1980s." Mason wrote: "The Swiss duo never managed to capitalize on this song's casual sophistication and melodic grace, but it remains a glorious anomaly." The prominent saxophone on the song was played by Christian Ostermeier. Watch our great music videos ❯ https://goo.gl/feVLNN More TopPop?
