Great Visual Effects on the Sega Saturn - Part 3 17:20
Great Visual Effects on the Sega Saturn - Part 3
Let's take a look at some viewer recommendations for some of the better-looking games on the Sega Saturn. I'm now on Patreon! Ending Music during the credits is from Batman for the Sega Genesis. SLX Logo By: Jan Neves YouTube Page - https://www.youtube.com/user/Jan3d Intro by Evan S. https://portfolio.tsestudios.com/ Episode Notes: 1. Captured on real hardware. 2. I chose the games based on titles that did not appear in the first 2 episodes, as well as games that seemed to get the most request in the comments. 3. Of course there are many more great-looking games for the Saturn. Sound off if you'd like to see a part 4! 4. For those curious, VDP stood for Video Display Processor. VDP1 was the sprite and polygon engine for the Saturn. Simply, if you saw polygons or moving characters on the screen, this chip likely was doing it. VDP2 handled the backgrounds and the infinite planes. It could do these in layers at the same time so you could have parallax and a 3D-looking floor all in the same shot. 5. Saturn underwent many changes during its R&D. It is constantly mislabeled as a 2D machine that was made 3D at the last minute. This is utterly not true and often uses Hideki Sato interviews as a reference. You need to understand that games like Panzer Dragon and Virtua Fighter were among the first games in development for the Saturn and were always going to be 3D. Where the mistake comes is that Hideki Sato was there from the very start of the Saturn's development, and thus when it was to be based on the System32 all the way back in 1992. The Saturn morphed from a 2D to 3D console over the course of YEARS, not at the last minute. The last-minute change people within Sega are talking about is the late addition of a second VDP(VDP2). Saturn was meant to be a polygon rendering console with 2 CPUs from 1993 forward. The Saturn was not meant to be a dedicated 2D machine any more than the PlayStation was, considering the latter started life as a CDROM attachment for the SNES. 6. When Sega started marketing the Saturn, they pitched it as a 64-bit console. By their estimate, the two 32-bit CPUs added up, and that made it better than the Playstation and 3DO. Some inside Sega even wanted to drive it as a 128-bit console since all the processors should be added up. That's marketing for you.

Mortal Kombat II Sega Saturn - Review Now Rated PG! 14:35
Mortal Kombat II Sega Saturn - Review Now Rated PG!
YouTube thought my first upload was too violent for advertisers. Now presented in a glorious fatality-free PG option for those of you that need it. SLX Logo By: Jan Neves YouTube Page - https://www.youtube.com/user/Jan3d Intro by Evan S. https://portfolio.tsestudios.com/ Episode Notes: 1. Saturn footage captured on real hardware. 2. Mortal Kombat II for the Playstation was not released outside of Japan because Sony did not want to dilute sales on its limited exclusive, MK3. 3. Probe did the ports for the Genesis and 32X as well. Making one wonder could someone else have done the job better. 4. Shang Tsung would be an issue for CD based consoles for years. It really wasn't until till much later before the loading during matches was resolved. 5. The MK series was never quite arcade perfect on the Saturn. Ultimate MK3 was missing things as well. 6. I would much rather play the 16-bit era console releases than this. 32X beats the pants off of it.

Street Fighter II Champion Edition - PC Engine Review 14:38
Street Fighter II Champion Edition - PC Engine Review
Whether you wanna call it 8-Bit or 16-Bit, there is no question it did a spectacular version of Street Fighter II. I'm now on Patreon! Help support the channel. https://www.patreon.com/segalordx Check out my Sega Lord X merchandise page! https://segalordx.threadless.com/ If you would like to support the channel directly: https://www.paypal.me/segalordx Head over to Facebook to hear me ramble about various things: https://www.facebook.com/segalordx/ I'm now on Twitter! https://twitter.com/Sega_Lord_X Opening "Sega" jingle is from Astal for the Sega Saturn. Ending Music during the credits is from Batman for the Sega Genesis. SLX Logo By: Jan Neves YouTube Page - https://www.youtube.com/user/Jan3d Intro by Evan S. https://portfolio.tsestudios.com/ Episode Notes: 1. PC Engine footage captured from real hardware. 2. There are a number of SNK fighters that transitioned to the PC Engine well. They used the Arcade Card for the CDROM to bring home those games far better than you would have thought possible. 3. Though the PC Engine version of Champion Edition has no speed settings, it still plays plenty fast. I imagine most will not miss the extra settings unless they really appreciated the higher speeds. 4. Similar to the Genesis, Capcom did not develop most of its properties on the PC Engine. Outside studios took up much of that workload. They did do this, however. 5. The HuCard for this is thicker than most games. It's similar to the Super System Card for the CDROM. 6. This was very well received at its release. Most gaming publications reviewed it even though it was a Japanese import, giving it scores similar to the Genesis and SNES editions. 7. I'd rank the console like this: Visuals(2/3 could be a tie honestly) - #1 SNES #2 PCE #3 MD MUSIC - #1 MD #2 SNES #3 PCE SOUND EFFECTS - #1 SNES #2 PCE #3 MD GAMEPLAY(almost exclusively because of the available controllers and speed options) - #1 MD #2 PCE #3 SNES

Super Street Fighter 2 - Sega Genesis Review 14:59
Super Street Fighter 2 - Sega Genesis Review
A new challenge awaits for your Sega Genesis. Gameplay capture from the Mega SG. Music clips from real hardware. 2. Despite Street Fighter's impressive sales on 16-bit platforms, Super Street Fighter II Turbo did not appear on the Genesis or SNES. 3. I really wanted to hammer home how these later-release Genesis games were seen in the gaming press. The SNES commanded an absolute majority when it came to how 16-bit games were covered and scored from about 1994 onwards. Despite many great games for the Genesis, you hardly ever heard anything about them, and the SNES dominated Game of the Month/Year awards almost consistently. 4. There are many hacks for this game to help the color and sound. If you have not seen or heard them, they are well worth the effort to play them. 5. The Genesis can actually only handle 32 megabits under normal conditions. To get the 40 megabits you see in this game, Capcom used a technique called bank switching to handle the extra ROM. That extra memory also gives you a few more voice samples not heard in the SNES release.

PlayStation Domination- The Early Days of the Sony PlayStation 32:13
PlayStation Domination- The Early Days of the Sony PlayStation
Let's look at 1995 and how things went for the Sony PlayStation in the US. Captured on real hardware via RGB. 2. The standalone gameplay segment at the end of Rayman is from the Jaguar version. I used it here because I had video from a lot further along in that version. 3. I used the arcade Tekken in this because I wanted to show you that the two are virtually identical visually. I assume most of you remember how the PS version looks. The home version did have extra content. 4. From the outset it was clear that the PlayStation was no slouch when it came to 2D visuals. There are things on the Saturn I feel the PS could not have pulled off, but it was still capable of some pretty impressive results. 5. Though I am a Sega fan at heart, I have no issue telling you like it is. Sony trounced Sega in the West. It was not a fight. It was an ass-kicking of prolific proportions. Sega did just about everything wrong they could have. 6. Sony's MK3 exclusivity only related to that original release. That's why the Saturn received Ultimate MK3 and MK Trilogy a while later. 7. The fact there was no Madden or Sega made NFL option for the Saturn in 1995 is one of the reasons I believe Sega lost so badly in the US. Had Sega a full professional lineup of sports titles ready to go in those first few months, I feel the Saturn would have sold much better.

SLX Logo By: Jan Neves YouTube Page - https://www.youtube.com/user/Jan3d Intro by Evan S. https://portfolio.tsestudios.com/ Episode Notes: 1. All footage captured on my X68000 Z Limited Edition 2. Mad Stalker would fail to load after the opening credit screen for Family Soft and Fill In Cafe. 3. No in-game options exist for the emulated games you add. No save states. No real front end at all. Just a file-loading screen. 4. XDF is still the only format you can use for game files. 5. I've tried more DirectInput controllers with this. They all seem to work. 6. This is a corrected re-upload that changed the opening to reflect that this product is not being shipped internationally. As of now, Amazon Japan will not send it to NA or Europe.

How Much Better Was The Neo Geo CDZ? 17:18
How Much Better Was The Neo Geo CDZ?
Let's see just how much better those load times were with the Neo Geo CDZ vs. the original top loader. Real hardware was used all around. 2. Music playing during each segment was added for entertainment purposes. There is no music during the actual loading. 3. The Neo Geo CDZ tends to be more expensive than the other models, particularly complete in box. 4. The CDZ uses a different power brick than the top loader. 5. By default, I also found the image quality of the CDZ to have a default higher contrast than the top loader, at least on my units. 6. The CDZ does have a CD player dashboard if you put in a music CD. It just skips it now with a game. 7. Believe me when I say that the point wasn't lost on me that this is 17 minutes of load times. While I genuinely wanted to make the episode to demonstrate the CDZ, I was also curious if anyone would actually watch it.

Sprite Scaling Power! - The Sega System 32 25:09
Sprite Scaling Power! - The Sega System 32
A culmination of Sega's System 24 2D technology and their powerhouse Y Board scaling features. It was known as the Sega System 32. Captured via MAME. These games are perfectly playable in MAME but many have visual and audio issues. 2. Despite being nothing like the arcade, Outrunners on the Genesis actually has a decent soundtrack. I use it here in the closing segment. 3. Outrunners is one of my favorite racing games ever. I first saw it at a summer camping retreat when I was 18. I dumped many credits into it that weekend. 4. I mention multiplayer numerous times here because most of these games had it and the entire balance of the gameplay was designed around it. The more people you have often leads to a much better experience. 5. I always thought the Sega CD would have been a great place for many of these games. It's true there would have been a lot of concessions and cutbacks, but I feel many would have still been well worth the effort. Especially since the Sega CD had so few games that really showed off its features.

Could Sonic Have Saved The Sega Saturn? 16:58
Could Sonic Have Saved The Sega Saturn?
A run down of Sonic's history on the Saturn and could a mainline release have turned things around. I'm of the opinion that Sega's lack of NFL/NBA titles early on the Saturn hurt just as much as no Sonic. 2. The story behind Sonic X-Treme is a lot more complicated than the stripped down version I tell here. If you have never read it in detail, do so. It's put Sega of America in a new light for you. 3. Of the stuff that Sega developed and published, nearly all of it worth playing came from Japan. Sega of America's eye for quality software was always suspect, but good night, it was like they weren't even trying on Saturn. 4. I stand by my assertion that Sonic X-Treme was a terrible idea. Not only does its E3 video look terrible, but most of the fan work trying to copy it, comes off just as rough. 5. I always laugh when I play Crash Bandicoot on the PS. It's almost like the developers took ideas from Clockwork Knight and Bug, themselves. 6. Often it is said that a 2D Sonic wouldn't have worked on the Saturn. That gamers didn't want that. Yet games like Rayman sold extremely well. I'm not so sure that a 2D Sonic with incredible visuals and some new gameplay mechanics wouldn't have sold well. Even something like Bug managed to be one of the best selling games for Saturn in NA.
