Human League - Empire State Human - (1980) • TopPop
The Human League are an English electropop/synth-pop band formed in Sheffield in 1977. Initially an experimental electronic outfit, the group signed to Virgin Records in 1979 and later attained widespread commercial success with their third album Dare in 1981. The album contained four hit singles, including the UK/US number one hit "Don't You Want Me." The band received the Brit Award for Best British Breakthrough Act in 1982. Further hits followed throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s, including "Mirror Man," "(Keep Feeling) Fascination," "The Lebanon," "Human" (a US No. 1) and "Tell Me When." The only constant band member since 1977 has been lead singer and songwriter Philip Oakey. Keyboard players Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh both left the band in 1980 to form Heaven 17. Under Oakey's leadership, the Human League then evolved into a commercially successful New Pop band with a new line-up including female vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley. Matchbox - Buzz Buzz a Diddle It - 22-05-1980 • TopPop
Matchbox were formed in Middlesex, in 1971 by Iain "Houndog" Terry (born 1950), Fred Poke (born 1948), Jimmy Redhead (born 1954) and Wiffle Smith (born 1948). After 1978, the line-up consisted of Graham Fenton (lead vocalist), Steve Bloomfield (lead guitar, vocals), Gordon Scott (rhythm guitar), Fred Poke (bass guitar) and Jimmy Redhead (drums). Redhead had left in 1973, Smith in 1977 and Lupton in 1978 to tour with Chuck Berry. Dick Callan joined Matchbox on guitar, saxophone and violin until approximately 1985, writing many of the band's B-sides. The band appeared in the 1980 film Blue Suede Shoes which detailed the revival of 1950s rock 'n' roll music scene at the time. The band's biggest hits include "Rockabilly Rebel" (Bloomfield, 1979), "Midnite Dynamos" (Bloomfield, 1980), a cover of The Crickets' "When You Ask About Love" (their only top five hit), and "Over the Rainbow" (adapted musical song, 1980). Their last single, "I Want Out" (Brian Hodgson/Ray Peters/Tony Colton, 1983) from their album, Crossed Line, was produced together with Kirsty MacColl. The best known and highest rated songs in the Top 40 in the Netherlands in 1980 were "Midnite Dynamos", which reached 3rd place and "Buzz Buzz a Diddle It", which reached 6th place. Striking with this song was the raw cry of the singer at the beginning of the song. This performance was recorded by TROS Top 50 and broadcast on May 22, 1980. Tom Browne - Funkin' for Jamaica (N.Y.) - (1980) • TopPop
"Funkin' for Jamaica (N.Y.)" is a 1980 single by jazz trumpeter Tom Browne. The single—a memoir of the Jamaica neighborhood in the New York City borough of Queens where Browne was born and raised—is from his second solo album, Love Approach. Browne got the idea for the song while he was at his parents' home. The vocals for the single were performed by Toni Smith (Thomassina Carrollyne Smith), who also helped compose the song. The song hit number one on the US Billboard R&B chart for a month. "Funkin' for Jamaica" peaked at number nine on the dance chart and made the Top 10 on the UK Singles Chart, but it never charted on the Billboard Hot 100. It later became one of the most interpolated melodies in R&B with the chorus' chord sequence used by artists such as Johnny Kemp. Thomassina “Toni Smith” Carrollyn Smith (1959-2020) acted largely behind the scenes, there is no question of the impact that she had on the international music scene. Born in The Bronx, New York she first came to the attention of the world when she joined a latter day version of the 50's vocal group The Crystals. This led her to meet popular trumpeter Tom Browne, and they began co-writing a song that would become a classic. “Funkin’ For Jamaica” became a smash around the world, topping the charts and elevating both Toni and Tom in the music world, as they both simply tore the song up. The two continued to work together on several songs over the next few years. With her beautiful Chaka-meets-Cheryl Lynn style voice, Toni Smith also became a sought-after background vocalist, working with a who’s who of R&B stars ranging from Stephanie Mills to James Ingram. She also provided guest vocals on several contemporary jazz hits in the 80s and 90s. Spargo - You and Me (2018 audio) • TopPop
'You And Me' was the debut single by Dutch disco-funk group Spargo, fronted by band members singer and keyboard player Ellert Driessen and singer Lilian Day Jackson. Released early 1980 it reached #1 in the Dutch Charts in April that year and held the #1 spot for 4 weeks, ultimately becoming the best selling single of the year. Other European countries followed suit with ‘You And Me’ reaching the top spot in the Belgian, Italian and Surinam Charts. It was rewarded an Edison Award for Best Single in 1980. In 2013 'You And Me' was voted 'Best Dutch Disco Classic’ by VARA TV Magazine. In 2018 the original track and a remix by Ellert's daughter Jazzi Bobbi entitled 'Spargo vs Jazzi Bobbi - You And Me (Remix)’ featured in a Vodafone commercial. Today we celebrate Robert Smith's 63rd birthday! Robert James Smith (born 21 April 1959) is an English singer, songwriter, musician, and record producer. He is best known as the lead singer, guitarist, primary songwriter, and only continuous member of the rock band the Cure, which he co-founded in 1978. He was also the lead guitarist for the band Siouxsie and the Banshees from 1982 to 1984, and was part of the short-lived group the Glove in 1983 This is a very rare recording by Gothic rock/ post punk rock band The Cure in the original line-up with Robert Smith, Simon Gallup, Matthieu Hartley, and Lol Tolhurst on the TROS TOP50 TV program on July 3, 1980. Simon and Robert have exchanged their instruments in this video with Simon playing guitar and Robert playing bass. This tape was recently discovered in the vaults of AVROTROS and we are very happy to present the full version now for the first time since the first broadcast in 1980. This is a premiere for YouTube and the rest of the world! This rare footage of The Cure has never been broadcast since this very first broadcast on July 3, 1980 in the TROS Top 50 in the Netherlands. We publish it today, February 3, 2022, to celebrate drummer Lol Tolhurst's 63rd birthday. Laurence "Lol" Tolhurst, (Laurence Andrew Tolhurst, Horley (Surrey, England), 3 February 1959) was drummer of the Cure untill 1988. This track has not been released as a single at the time and is still part of the Cure's live performances. This video has not been shown in later episodes because Robert Smith did not want to release a second single from the 'Seventeen Seconds' album in the Netherlands. 'A Forest' the lead single from the album 'Seventeen Seconds' by the way was recorded and broacast on the same tv-show and has been published before on this channel. A full version will be released in the coming weeks The Cure are an English rock band formed in 1978 in Crawley, West Sussex. Throughout numerous lineup changes since the band's formation, guitarist, lead vocalist, and songwriter Robert Smith has remained the only constant member. The band's debut album was 'Three Imaginary Boys' (1979) and this, along with several early singles, placed the band in the post-punk and new wave movements that had sprung up in the United Kingdom. This French disco consisted of Patrick Jean-Baptiste and Annette Eltice, both of Caribbean descent. The group was founded by producers Jean Kluger and Daniel Vangarde. The group owes its name to the Canadian capital Ottawa, the travel destination of a promotional tour from Kluger and Vangarde. In the Netherlands, Ottawan scored two hits in the Top 40 with the singles D.I.S.C.O. (1980) and Hands up (Give me your heart). D.I.S.C.O reached # 3 on the Dutch Top 40 on 6 September 1980. Spargo - You And Me (15-03-1980) • TopPop
Spargo are a Dutch band, formed in 1975, known for their hits "You and Me", "Head Up to the Sky", "One Night Affair", "Just For You" and "Hip Hap Hop" in the 1980s. Spargo was formed by Ruud Mulder, Hans Elbersen (both of whom had played in the blues rock group Space 7), Ellert Driessen, Jef Nassenstein and Leander Lammertink. Elbersen left the band and in 1979 American singer Lilian Day Jackson, stepdaughter of jazz drummer Art Blakley, joined. With Jackson and Driessen as lead vocalists, the band got its distinctive sound and got its breakthrough. In 1980, the single "You and Me" topped the charts in the Netherlands and also became the best-selling record of 1980. The single was also very successful across Europe, in Belgium, Germany, Iceland and Sweden. Between August 1980 and March 1982, Spargo achieved four more top-5 hits in the Netherlands, but the success of "You and Me" was not to be equalled. Between October 1982 and March 1984, the band achieved a further 4 Top-40 hits. This performance was part of the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the AVRO in a Toppop tv special presented by Ad Visser in 1998.
