Reviews: "I first saw this movie when the local TV station was running a "World's Worst Movies Week", and this was one of the movies. Some people might say the movie is so bad, it's good. It's a comedy / spoof / parody, and some people don't care for movies like that. If you like movies like "Young Frankenstein", "Blazing Saddles", "Buckaroo Banzai", etc., you'll most likely enjoy this movie! I had always liked John Astin in the original "The Addams Family" TV series, and enjoyed him in this movie. "About the only movie I consider funnier than "The Brothers O'Toole" (1973) is "The Big Lebowski" (1998). Both have the same combination of huge exaggeration coupled with subtle parody, exploding film conventions of their respective genres with completely out-of-place dialog. My appreciation of this no doubt speaks to a twisted sense of humor and an appreciation of the absurd; of which there is so little in more mainstream comedy features. So if you happen to be "Duckman" off-kilter, then "The Brothers O'Toole" is a film that you should seek out. John Astin's success the year before in another western parody, "Evil Roy Slade" (1972), inspired a sequel of sorts. Or at least a reprise of his title role, this time playing a very similar extreme outlaw character named "Desperate" Ambrose J. Littleberry. When not busy terrorizing citizens, poor Desperate is a henpecked husband. An almost unrecognizable Lee Meriwether wonderfully overplays his shrewish wife Poloma. It is definitely her signature performance and I laugh every time I think about what the Miss America pageant people must have thought about this hysterical portrayal. The humor in both films is nicely twisted but the "The Brothers O'Toole" is several notches above "Evil Roy Slade" on the IQ scale, which may account for it being a bit more obscure. Think "Support Your Local Sheriff" vs "Support Your Local Gunfighter" for an example of the same type of comparative difference. For Astin this is a duel role, as he and Steve Carlson play the title characters; a pair of too sophisticated drifter brothers Michael and Timothy O'Toole. Michael is an unambitious cardsharp and Timothy is a small-time rogue and roué. They come to the tiny town of Molybdenum, Colorado (Molly B'Damn to the locals) from separate disasters. Michael has just been ridden out of another town and Timothy is fleeing the shotgun wedding bells and angry father of his latest conquest, Bonnie Lou MacClanahan (Miranda Berry who is flat out irresistible). The town is a collection of characters played by a collection of character actors like Richard Erdman, Pat Carroll, Allyn Joslyn (the reluctant sheriff), Jessie White (the slimy mayor). Joslyn and White are especially good, as is Hans Conried who plays a financier obviously modeled on Cornelius Vanderbilt. The main plot device is mistaken identity as Michael O'Toole is mistaken for A. J. Littleberry and thrown in jail. Michael's summation at his trial and a later diatribe about the town are simply comedy classics, as is pretty much everything done and said by Richard Jury who plays the town's greedy undertaker, Harmon P. The most time of the movie is placed in a little town and that is very good for the atmosphere of the movie. Ivan Rassimov is very good in the part of Django and also Petro Sanchez is a very good partner for him. Rassimov's sister plays his real sister Rada. You can also see the writer and director Vincenzo Musolino in the part of Hondo. The great score is composed by Felice Di Stefano who also composed a few other scores for Mulargia and Musolino. Sent in to clean up the gang is Peterson Detective Agency operative James Barlow, who poses as an outlaw to gain the confidence of the officials and the thick-headed brothers. Complicating matters are Barlow's feelings for the Reno sister, Laura, who reluctantly keeps house for the boys out of family loyalty. Events heat up and rage surfaces as Barlow sets up the gang in a dawn train robbery. Reviews: "After burning an undercover agent alive, outlaw brothers Forrest Tucker, J. Carroll Naish, and Myron Healey are infiltrated again, this time by former Confederate super-spy Randolph Scott, sent by the Peterson (Pinkerton?) Detective Agency. He ends up falling in love with the brother's pretty, law-abiding sister. A slight cut above some of Scott's usual 1950's B-westerns (the ones not directed by Budd Boetticher), this has really good production values, entertaining heavies, as well as a script with some great hard-boiled moments and bits of nasty (for the 50's) violence. Also, you can't go wrong with Edger Buchanan as a crooked judge! Scott gives one of his typically tough, yet upright performances, while Tucker and Naish work well together and almost steal the show as the meanest of the Reno brothers." The cast is amazing for what had to be a fairly low budget RKO picture from the mid-1950's; Randolph Scott was an established star while Forrest Tucker, J. Carrol Naish, and Denver Pyle were all established, talented Western performers and Edgar Buchanan was one of the best Western character actors of all time. What hurts the movie severely and is its major flaw is the setting. Nothing about one single shot of the film looks anything like Southern Indiana or anywhere else in the Midwest, and exactly like California, where it was actually shot. This lack of authenticity is distracting, in some scenes more than others, but never completely destroys the fine performances. Like some of the others, I would like to know more about the historical Reno Brothers and how closely this film represents their true story; I'm sure that it's somewhat closer than Elvis' ''Love Me Tender'', which is about the same topic and came out the next year." The forest is their church, and they strive to convince would-be (de)foresters such as Fallon that the trees are more valuable left standing than being cut down and used for lumber. In addition, there is a truly remarkable action sequence--clearly the great grand-daddy of all of Tom Cruise's (et al.) exploits--in which Douglas leaps aboard a runaway train. Reviews: "A man known as "Desperaaadooo" to his enemies and the singer of the title song, or simply Steve (Andrea Giordana, "Quella sporca storia nel west") to his friends, tries to make money outside the law at the end of the civil war. He stops at nothing, even stealing it from a blind man seems not to trouble him. Nevertheless, when that old man is killed, Desperado decides to avenge his death. Not only the presence of Piero Lulli (plays the blind man) reminds me of "Se sei vivo, spara". Just like Questi's masterpiece, "El Desperado" - directed by "Django", "Texas Addio" and "Preparati la bara" screenplay co-writer Rossetti - picks up the subject of everyone's obsessive greed that leads to self-destruction as well as moral decomposition. Even priests and judges can not be trusted in this movie. It's a dirty world, so the long torture/murder scene in the mud is apt. Regarding the tavern brawl scene in the middle of the movie, it is by no means a standard genre scene! Steve requires that fight so he can kill one of his enemies unnoticed, it is a deliberate part of his revenge plan! Also, there are little touches like the piano player beating up somebody who by mistake hit a chord on his instrument. Very well directed, thus it is a pity it remained Rossetti's only western." I liked Chip Corman (Andrea Giordana) as Steve, El Desperado, who spends much of his screen time in a Confederate soldier uniform masquerading as a blind man's returning son. He's not, of course, he's really after a stash of gold the blind man has been saving, hidden in a ghost town that's right out of Django, all mud and muck. Pretty soon though a gang shows up to waylay a Confederate payroll that's rolling through the town. The only negatives are the unavoidable fistfight/barroom brawl and a scene where Desperado gets kicked around in the mud which goes on too long. The finale is great and makes up for quite a bit of the typical spaghetti hi-jinx which leaves non-fans of the genre cold. If you like pasta you'll dig this almost unknown gem. The second of Sergio Corbucci's Euro Westerns that I have managed to track down lacks the punch that he would find in DJANGO and represents a genre in search of it's form. It's actually a very unique looking production, using exteriors located in the former Yugoslavia rather than Spain and existing as a sort of brooding, somber range war movie than a slick cartoon about Pistoleros and Gringos battling it out under the hot sun. James Mitchum is adequate as the Yankee imported to sway box office receipts, with genre legends George Ardisson and my hero Giacomo Rossi-Stuart adding a bit more color in supporting roles. It's a bit more enjoyable than Corbucci's followup MINNESOTA CLAY which I have a strong aversion to that cannot be put into words. I hate MINNESOTA CLAY but I merely dislike MASSACRE AT GRAND CANYON. Yet it's historically significant, with the presence of Albert Band helping to cement the film as a transitional effort between the Karl May influenced Schnitzel Westerns of Harald Reinl et al & the full blown Spaghetti Western boon precipitated in part by Corbucci's DJANGO. By then he would have found his balance between the brooding, languid sense of pessimism and an arty flair that would become his trademark. In this particular episode, Ben seems to have an attraction to the wife and decides his family needs to help them find some sort of way to make a living. Besides the husband and wife, there's a "friend" who is actually what I believe to be a crooked gambler. Claude Atkins is the only character actor, I think, who could have played this bad boy row to perfection. In the end, his character becomes so evil that you wish he would die. Morally, I cringe at Ben's kissing the wife and then at Adam's admitting that he's fine with it. This is the very thing that the man is accusing the Cartwright's of, and Ben's actions are simply proving him true. I think Ben had no right acting on his attraction to this woman who is unhappy in her marriage. But that's just a question of morals." Nevada Kid (Jeff Cameron) gets unexpected support from a bounty hunter (Gordon Mitchell) who carries a list of all wanted men - which has the size of a big city's telephone registry. They rescue a maiden in distress (played by Simone Blondell, the daughter of director Fidani) and happily kill everybody who looks like a bandit. Reviews: ""The long cavalcade of vengeance" begins in New Mexico right after the Civil War when Reb vet Jeff Carter (former "Son Of Hercules" Richard Harrison) comes home to find a band of outlaws had robbed, raped, and murdered his sister. It isn't hard for him to figure out whodunit since the girl's body was covered with a distinctive poncho, one Jeff recognizes as belonging to a former ranch employee. Jeff isn't very good at pursuit, however, and he drinks a lot, so he's quickly captured by the gang's leader (peplum alumni Rik Battaglia) who ties him to a hill of ants. The ex-soldier (you can tell by the gold stripe down his gray pants) escapes and learns a thing or two along the way as he tracks the men down one by one, leaving a strip of torn poncho beside their corpses. And he'll stop at nothing to get his man, even if it means becoming sheriff of the terrified town the villains have taken over... The most that can be said about DEADLY TRACKERS is that it's just another second string spaghetti western by a former "sword & sandal" director and would've been unexceptional in every way if it hadn't been for the unintentional humor and past-their-prime stars. And where is billed-above-the-title Anita Ekberg, anyway? The movie begins at the end just to prove the somnambulistic sex siren (who'd gained a few pounds since her salad days) is in the damn thing before the story unfolds in flashback. The Ek comes in about three-quarters of the way through as a saloon gal whose unattractive co-workers perform a listless can-can as she sashays down the stairs. If this were a Republic western, Vera Ralston would have led the dance and had a song, to boot, but poor Anita wasn't even talented enough to have a ditty dubbed. There would have been more than enough time if they hadn't wasted so much on a horse race alongside a stage coach across a landscape that looked nothing like the American Southwest despite the proliferation of fake cacti. The sexual "good guy/bad girl" (non)chemistry between the hefty Ekberg and a balding blond Harrison (who showed a lot more cleavage than his co-star) adds a bit of Destry to the mix and the camp factor's ramped when a prancing bandito with an exaggerated Southern accent says things like "you're kinda pretty for a girl". The production design and the dubbing are just as exemplary. Composer Felice Di Stefano furnishes a lively orchestral score with lots of adroit guitar strumming for dramatic effect. This rugged frontier tale set in a repressive Mexico plays like a variation on the popular Zorro epics that initially helped spawn the Euro-western genre. The striking protagonist, Quintana (George Stevenson, aka Tony Di Mitri of "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly"), plans to free Manuel de la Loma (Celso Faria of "Four Came to Kill Sartana"), a man wrongly accused of shooting three Rurale soldiers. Wealthy landowner and provincial governor Don Juan (Aldo Bufi Landi of "The Perfect Killer") had Manuel arrested and imprisoned so he could lure our hero into a trap. Quintana goes in alone to rescue Manuel. At first, everything goes according to plan with no bloodshed as our hero gets the drop on the solidary soldier carrying the keys to Manuel's cell. Don Juan has scheduled execution by hanging for Manuel, so our poncho-clad champion must act quickly before he is hanged at dawn. Quintana not only releases Manuel but also a horde of other unjustly arrested peons. As the prisoners scramble triumphantly out the front door, Winchester-wielding Rurale soldiers who have been awaiting them mow them down in a fusillade of gunfire. Naturally, our hero displays his customary aplomb with a six-gun and wipes out those guards. Quintana isn't happy about the massacre. Meantime, Don Juan forces the beautiful Virginia de Leon (Femi Benussi of "Syndicate Sadists") to marry him against her will. The marriage is foiled, however, when Quintana with a small army of revolutionaries arrive and start shooting and killing Rurales. The cowardly Don Juan flees on horseback and Quintana pursues him. Meanwhile, Rurales and revolutionaries blast away at each other without mercy. You can tell that this is Spaghetti western from the way that Vincenzo Musolino orchestrates the gunfights. Men on both sides throw up their hands and spin around before they hit the dirt. The final confrontation between Quintana and Don Juan resembles a joust as they charge each other on horseback with their revolvers held at their sides.
