Enjoy the great legacy of Toppop in HD! Percy Tyrone Sledge (November 25, 1940 – April 14, 2015) was an American R&B, soul and gospel singer. He is best known for the song "When a Man Loves a Woman", a No. 1 hit on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts in 1966. It was awarded a million-selling, Gold-certified disc from the RIAA. 'My Special Prayer was a 1969 hit for Percy. In the USA Billboard charts it reached the 94th position in that year. However in the Netherlands it reached no. 1 in the Dutch Top 40 as well as in the single Top 100. In the Top 40 it was no. 1 for no less than 5 weeks! It became a hit agian in 1974 when it was re-released in the Netherlands. In the Dutch Top 100 it reached no. 4. And in the Top 2000 of the Netherlands is was featured in the charts between 1999 and 2015. This video was broadcast by TopPop on November 15, 1974. Having previously worked as a hospital orderly in the early 1960s, Sledge achieved his strongest success in the late 1960s and early 1970s with a series of emotional soul songs. In later years, Sledge received the Rhythm and Blues Foundation's Career Achievement Award. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2005. Tee Set was a Dutch band from Delft, the Netherlands, that made rhythm and blues in the 1960s and pop music from the early 1970s. The main hits of Tee Set are 'Ma Belle Amie' (1969) and She likes weeds, a Dutch number 1 hit in December 1970. Composer Hans van Eijck was the musical brain of the group. Singer was Peter Tettero The band started in 1965 with Peter Tetteroo, Gerard Romeyn, Polle Eduard and Carry Janssen. Later Robbie Plazier and Hans van Eijck joined the group. This is a truly unique and legendary performance on TopPop of Black Sabbath, the British heavy metal band. The band was formed in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (vocals), Tony Iommi (lead guitar), Terence "Geezer" Butler (bass guitar), and Bill Ward (drums). In this line up they recorded in 1970 the album 'Paranoid' with the single of the same name. This album reached #1 in the album charts in the UK and the Netherlands and #2 in Germany and Denmark. "My Sweet Lord" is a song by English musician George Harrison, released in November 1970 on his triple album All Things Must Pass. It was also released as a single, Harrison's first as a solo artist, and topped charts worldwide; it was the biggest-selling single of 1971 in the UK. In America and Britain, the song was the first number-one single by an ex-Beatle. Harrison originally gave the song to his fellow Apple Records artist Billy Preston to record; this version, which Harrison co-produced, appeared on Preston's Encouraging Words album in September 1970. George Harrison MBE (25 February 1943 – 29 November 2001) was an English musician, singer, songwriter, and music and film producer who achieved international fame as the lead guitarist of the Beatles. Sometimes called "the quiet Beatle", Harrison embraced Indian culture and helped broaden the scope of popular music through his incorporation of Indian instrumentation and Hindu-aligned spirituality in the Beatles' work. Although the majority of the band's songs were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, most Beatles albums from 1965 onwards contained at least two Harrison compositions. His songs for the group include "Taxman", "Within You Without You", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Here Comes the Sun" and "Something". Young & Company - I Like [What You're Doing To Me] (1980) This funky sextet was centered around the brothers Billy, Mike and Kenneth Young from West Virginia, USA. After moving to East Orange, New Jersey, in 1970 they formed the Young Movement with Buddy ‘Hank’ Hankerson, an ex-member of Aurra (bass/keyboards/guitar) and Dave Reyes (drums). When vocalist Jackie Thomas joined in 1979 they first recorded as Young & Co. Among the first tracks theyrecorded was ‘I Like (What You’re Doing To Me’, which reputedly sold over 250, 000 in the USA, and did go all the way into the UK Top 20 in 1980. Lieutenant Pigeon - Mouldy Old Dough • TopPop
Lieutenant Pigeon are an English novelty musical group popular in the early 1970s, originating from Coventry. A spin-off from an experimental music band Stavely Makepeace, the group was fronted by Rob Woodward and managed by him and drummer Nigel Fletcher. Other members included bassist Stephen Johnson. The group's sound was dominated by a heavy honky-tonk-style piano played by Woodward's mother, Hilda. Lieutenant Pigeon achieved two UK hits: "Mouldy Old Dough", written by Woodward with bandmate Fletcher, which reached number one in 1972, followed by "Desperate Dan" (number 17 in 1973). Both tracks were largely instrumental, with the titles providing virtually the only lyrics. "Mouldy Old Dough" (the title being an adaptation of the 1920s jazz phrase, "vo-de-o-do") became the second biggest selling UK single of the year, behind The Band of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards' bagpipe version of "Amazing Grace". Hilda Woodward died, aged 85, on 22 February 1999. She was aged 58 at the time of "Mouldy Old Dough" topping the charts, which made her one of the oldest female artists to feature on a UK number one single.
