Wax - Systematic - 27-01-1987 • TopPop
Graham Gouldman celebrated his 75th anniversary on May 10, 2021. That's why we publish this Toppop clip today. Graham Keith Gouldman (born 10 May 1946) is an English singer, songwriter, and musician. He has been the only constant member of the art rock band 10cc. Between 1984 and 1990, Gouldman teamed with American singer Andrew Gold, with whom he had co-written material in 1981, to form Wax. They produced four albums. In the US, they were listed as Wax UK, while later releases were additionally credited as Andrew Gold & Graham Gouldman. In 1981, 10cc was working on what would become the album Ten Out of 10. Andrew Gold was invited to record with the band by Lenny Waronker, head of A&R at Warner Bros, and played keyboards and percussion on the completed album, as well as adding background vocals. The U.S. release of Ten Out of 10 also featured three songs co-written by Gold: "Power of Love," "Runaway" and "We’ve Heard It All Before". It led to an offer to join the band – an offer Gold declined because of other commitments. This Toppop recording was first broadcast on January 27, 1987 The lyrics: Hey! Black - Everything's Coming Up Roses (1987) • TopPop
Colin Vearncombe (26 May 1962 – 26 January 2016), known by his stage name Black, was an English singer-songwriter. He emerged from the punk rock music scene and achieved mainstream pop success in the late 1980s, most notably with the 1986 single "Wonderful Life", which was an international hit the next year. William Ruhlmann of AllMusic described Vearncombe as a "smoky-voiced singer/songwriter, whose sophisticated jazz-pop songs and dramatic vocal delivery place him somewhere between Bryan Ferry and Morrissey". Michael Hann of The Guardian described his voice as a "slightly frayed baritone".
