Een legendarisch tv-programma van de Nederlandse televisiegeschiedenis is toch wel AVRO's Toppop. De presentatie was in handen van Ad Visser en Krijn Torringa. Later zou Marjon van Rijn de presentatie overnemen van Krijn. De meeste videoclips zijn bewaard gebleven, maar de live presentaties, zoals je in dit fragment kunt zien niet. We zien de leader en de imposante decors waarin Krijn de nummers aankondigt. André Olgers was verantwoordelijk voor de grafische vormgeving. Pussycat was a Dutch pop group from Brunssum in Limburg led by the three Kowalczyk sisters: Toni, Betty and Marianne. Other members of the band were Lou Willé (Toni's then-husband), Theo Wetzels, Theo Coumans, and John Theunissen. The band had four international hits in a row in the mid-seventies: Mississippi (1975), Georgia (1976), Smile (1976) and My broken souvenirs (1977) and then a series of hit singles in the Netherlands and Belgium. Mississippi was number 1 the Netherlands and in another 15 countries. 'Mississippi' achieved 22 gold records. It is estimated that "Mississippi" sold over five million copies worldwide. The Trammps were an American disco and soul band, who were based in Philadelphia and were one of the first disco bands. They visited the Toppop studios in the Netherlands many times. They are best known for their Grammy winning song, "Disco Inferno", originally released in 1976, becoming a UK pop hit and US R&B hit. After inclusion in the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, the song was re-released in 1978 and became an international pop hit worldwide. The lead vocals are from Jimmy Ellis and the bass vocals are by Earl Young. Jimmy Ellis died on March 8, 201. This single 'That's Where The Happy people Go' reached #25 in the Dutch Top 40 on May 8, 1976. The Toppop performance was first broadcast on April 16, 1976.
