As a massive fan of slasher movies, Eli Roth's Thanksgiving really stood out. His intention of finally giving us horror fanatics a slasher set at Thanksgiving (Blood Rage aside) played like gangbusters. And there were rumors for years that Roth would expand it into a full-length feature film. Thankfully, over 16 years later, this plan has finally come to fruition. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: Better Than Dial of Destiny?
To many, the Indiana Jones series ended with The Last Crusade, despite running for two more movies. Many fans disliked the most recent film, Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny, but that reception seems muted compared to how Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was received. When it came out in 2008, people hated how the film was bogged down by silliness, including the infamous “nuke the fridge” scene and Shia LaBeouf’s character swinging on vines through the jungle. Plus, for many, including aliens was too much, even for the heightened reality of an Indiana Jones movie. Yet, in retrospect, is Kingdom of the Crystal Skull that bad? JJ Abrams' Star Trek: One of the Best Reboots Ever?
How did J.J. Abrams' 2009 Star Trek Reboot come to be? In 2002, Star Trek Nemesis just about marked the death of the franchise. Indeed, the fact that it was a worldwide box-office disaster meant that many felt the series had run out of steam. For the first time in many years, there were no active big-screen franchises or Trek shows running on TV, with the often neglected Star Trek: Enterprise going off the air in 2005. It seemed space operas were out of vogue, with the rise of superhero movies taking Hollywood by storm. Not only was there the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies and the Christopher Nolan Batman movies breaking box office records, but also a little company called Marvel studios decided to start making the own movies, beginning with Iron Man. Paramount wanted a franchiise that would be as big as these, so the decision was made to reboot Star Trek. Star Wars Revenge of the Sith: An Amazing End to the Prequel Trilogy?
To put it mildly, the Star Wars prequel trilogy was divisive. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith was hyped up as the entry into the saga that would finally redeem the trilogy, as it would depict Anakin Skywalker’s seduction to the dark side and eventual transformation into Darth Vader. It was the first Star Wars movie to be given a PG-13 rating, as George Lucas and his crew promised that this was a much darker, more adult Star Wars tale than the rest of the prequel trilogy. Lucas was certainly right, with Revenge of the Sith ending the series on a dark, foreboding note, and to many, it remains a highlight of the prequel trilogy. Does that mean it ranks up there with the original films? Mutant Meltdown: Analyzing the Downfall of X-Men Origins: Wolverine
In 2009, X-Men Origins: Wolverine caused quite a scandal when a workprint version leaked online weeks before the movie opened. Nowadays, that would be enough to kill a film, but the movie still pulled in respectable grosses worldwide. While no one remembers the workprint situation now, the film still has a terrible reputation mainly due to the shocking way the character, Deadpool, was used in the movie. Everyone thought Ryan Reynolds was ideally cast, only for him to turn up at the end of the movie as the “merc with a mouth” but - WITHOUT A MOUTH! Alas, this is only one of the many reasons why X-Men Origins: Wolverine has become an obscure entry into the saga. WTF Happened to DANE COOK?
Specializing in fast paced story telling and observational humor... and being loud. Dane Cook can often be seen moving all over that stage as he uses his entire body to tell a joke. He also used social media to promote himself before that was even a thing. Mr. Cook comes off like your energetic roommate ranting in the living room after a few too man brewskis...and its kinda a beautiful thing to watch and like it or not, he was exactly what the world of comedy needed at that time. Dane Cook’s style was soon embraces by millions, allowing him to fill up stadiums with laughing frat boys and and comedy connoisseurs alike. He stole the hearts of many young people... and stole the jokes of many funny people... or just happened to have the same funny thought. The dude became more of a rockstar than a stand up comedian but as time went on, it seems many people have left this once stadium selling gout comedian in the dust. WTF Happened to Full Metal Jacket?
If we’re talking about the holy trinity of Vietnam War movies, there’s no doubt about which ones reign supreme. Indeed, Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, Oliver Stone’s Platoon, and Stanely Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket will forever be regarded as the most viscerally harrowing glimpses into the physical and psychological toll that the Vietnam War had on a generation of young American men. Yet, despite the popularity of Full Metal Jacket, one can’t help but wonder how much more successful the movie would have been if weren’t released in the shadow of Platoon’s smashing success. Remember, not only did Platoon win four Oscars in 1987, including Best Picture, but it was released in theaters just five months before Full Metal Jacket. As a result, Kubrick’s undeniable classic sort of got lost in the shuffle and never received the contemporaneous accolades and attention it deserved. Of course, always ahead of the curve and far beyond his time, Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket has only gained appreciation and popularity over the years, with many even asserting that it’s the absolute best Vietnam War movie of all time. The truth is, Kubrick began working on Full Metal Jacket long before Platoon was in production and has more in common with Apocalypse Now than Oliver Stone’s Oscar-winning classic. What Happened to The Shield (2002-2008)?
Every once in a while you will find a show that will become your obsession. You know what I'm talking about, it’s the show that you can't stop thinking about. The water cooler shows as they say. Game of Thrones, The Wire, and of course, Breaking Bad are the prime examples. But some shows that are equally as good, sometimes just fly under the radar. TV shows that are just as good if not better than the Breaking Bad's of the world. One of those shows is called The Shield, starring Michael Chiklis as corrupt cop Vic Mackey. This show is something special. To say that The Shield pushes the envelope is an understatement. The series showed the ugly side of crime and law enforcement. Corruption, murder, racism, political machinations, serial killers, and other dark stuff that you would probably would not like to hear about. This is one of those TV shows that I had to take a break from because it just got too intense. But, the complex and fascinating characters just brought me back for more.
