Commando: The Movie That Definitively Made Schwarzenegger A Hero? 13:16
Commando: The Movie That Definitively Made Schwarzenegger A Hero?
If there’s one word that perfectly sums up the bombastic nature of 80s action cinema, it has to be ‘excess’. Action behemoths, big hair, muscles, fantastical landscapes, and arm-wrestling matches that could be won by the simple flip of your favourite cap. It was an amazing decade for movies, and for action movie icons. Looking back on the early career of one of the era’s most iconic megastars, Arnold Schwarzenegger, there’s one thing that jumps out like doomed cannon-fodder from one of his movies; they were never dull. After having successfully conquered the world of bodybuilding, and subsequently the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, with career defining roles in Conan the Barbarian, Conan the Destroyer, The Terminator and Red Sonja, it’s clear that going bigger would be better for his career. Those movies highlighted how Arnie’s impressive physique could be utilised for maximum effect, whether he was wielding a sword as Conan, or destroying an entire police station as the T-800 in The Terminator, it was pretty clear that muscles and mayhem were very much on the menu for 80s audiences. This is just as well, because the movie we’re revisiting today, 1985’s Commando, is a glorious example of 80s excess. You want violence, you get it in spades. Daft one liners? Yup. Over the top, memorable villains with awesome facial hair. You betchya!. That’s right movie fans, we’re heading up that secluded mountain to catch-up with retired special agent, John Matrix, before he’s forced to rescue a very young Alyssa Milano from his former unit. So, grab hold of that airliner’s wheel after despatching some rogue passengers, as we take a retrospective look at the Mark L. Lester classic from 1985, here on ARNIE REVISITED! Terminator 2: Judgement Day: Still One of the Greatest Movies of All Time? 15:17
Terminator 2: Judgement Day: Still One of the Greatest Movies of All Time?
Killer cyborgs, A-list megastars, groundbreaking visual effects AND a kick-ass soundtrack! It can mean only one thing. Yes, that’s right good friends of JoBlo, uber director James Cameron is back to show us exactly how to follow up one of the biggest smash hits of your career, with a sequel that had to surpass the expectations of even the most hardcore fan of original movie, and also show the world how to revolutionise modern VFX…Again. Cameron had already wowed audiences with The Terminator back in 1984 and had proven that he could create impressive sequels to existing sci-fi franchises, with the action-heavy Aliens in 1986. He’d also made great strides with visual effects in 1989’s The Abyss so could his original vision of having a liquid terminator in the franchise really work? That’s right, sci-fi fans, we’re giving one of the greatest sequels ever made a retrospective dissection, to see whether it still gets a slowly melting thumbs-up, or if it should be pulverised into the past like a T-800 endoskeleton. So, stop crushing those pull-ups and turn your copy of You Could Be Mine up to eleven, as we re-appraise Cameron’s 1991 epic, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, here on REVISITED! Madame Web Movie Review: Is It Really That Bad? 07:24
Madame Web Movie Review: Is It Really That Bad?
Madame Web opens this week with pretty bad buzz. Let’s get one thing out of the way first. Not every Marvel movie by Sony has been bad. For my money, they’re behind the two greatest Spider-Man movies ever made, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse. And there’s the Venom movies. Those are elevated B-movies, but they’re a decent amount of fun thanks to Tom Hardy’s merciless scenery chewing, and the grosses for those flicks have been astronomical. Clearly, someone likes them. But Morbius…Morbius. Of course, one of the reasons people aren’t hyped about Madame Web is that the character isn’t exactly a household name. For those who aren’t in the loop, in the comic, Madame Web is a paralyzed, blind clairvoyant, which is distinctly not what Dakota Johnson is playing here. She’s already appeared, in a manner of speaking, in Across the Spider-Verse as a guidance counsellor, voiced by Rachel Dratch.  So it seems Sony’s taken a loose approach in adapting the character to the big screen, which is fine. I think people have been down on it because of the meme-worthy trailer. Those posters, which looked whipped together, didn’t help, with everyone assuming this would be just another B-superhero movie. So what’s the verdict? Does The Last House On The Left Remake Surpass The Original? 10:33
Does The Last House On The Left Remake Surpass The Original?
Remakes are always a tricky proposition. Take, for instance, 1982’s The Thing, objectively better than its predecessor, but it lingered in uncertainty before finding its deserved appreciation. Some remakes, like John Carpenter's The Thing, Don Seigel’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and David Cronenberg’s The Fly, excel in their own right. Quality-wise, these films stand undisputed. The debate over what can or can't be remade is open with few sacred cows left. While some updates, like The Fog, suffer from inferior CGI and casting, others, such as The Last House on the Left (2009), benefit from enhanced budgets and professionalism, offering fresh perspectives on harrowing tales. Today, we'll explore why the 2009 remake deserves recognition beyond its usual categorization. WATCH OR OWN THE FILM HERE: https://bit.ly/3whGFTV Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield Edited by Brandon Nally Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon Executive Producer by Berge Garabedian SERIES SYNOPSIS: THE BLACK SHEEP features different takes on horror films that the masses or/and critics didn't care for but that we found merit in. The Worst Movies of 2023 31:14
The Worst Movies of 2023
Yes, 2023 was an excellent year for cinema (though a TERRIBLE year for Hollywood, but we here at Awfully Good Movies believe you couldn’t have had the great movies without the bad ones, specifically the Top 10 Worst Movies of 2023! Last month, we held a poll for the year’s worst movies among our readers that, as always, gets tabulated against each film’s IMDb score and Tomatometer to end up with a list representing the biggest letdowns and losers amongst our moviegoing public. Whether it was Tomlin and Fonda trying to meet Tom Brady or Adam Driver trying to shoot CGI dinosaurs, the ten nights we spent in theatres watching this crap (except watching WHITE MEN CAN’T JUMP on Hulu) were far scarier than any nights we would spend at Freddy’s. Not even the likes of Vin Diesel driving cars through explosions (again) or Jason Statham punching prehistoric sharks (again) could’ve prepared us for the likes of THE FLASH shaking our faith in superhero cinema or THE EXORCIST: BELIEVER shaking our very belief in God… and by God, I mean David Gordon Green’s ability to handle horror. And need I say any more about my previous episode on EXPEND4BLES, the dumbest movie title since FAN4STIC and the dumbest Stallone sequel since ROCKY V? But thank God for the likes of Nolan and Scorsese for renewing our faith in the cinematic experience, just as WINNIE-THE-POOH: BLOOD AND HONEY getting a theatrical release was about to have us swearing off the movie gods. And thanks to all of you fabulous readers and viewers for getting me to my tenth anniversary working for this website… even if it means having to sift through all these shitty movies at the end of each year. Smallville (2001- 2011): What Happened to this Show? 29:26
Smallville (2001- 2011): What Happened to this Show?
We all love a good superhero origin story. Sure, it's great to see Spider-Man swing from buildings, but it’s what Uncle Ben tells a young Peter Parker that touches us all. We all love seeing Batman kick the Joker's teeth in, but we are all fascinated by that tragic night in crime alley. So it’s no surprise that the first and greatest superhero of all time should have a TV show about what defines him. There is a reason why Clark Kent is the best of us. While Batman may be the ultimate example of physical perfection, Superman is the pinnacle of the goodness of humanity. But fans have always debated: is Superman Clark Kent, or is Clark Kent just a disguise? I have always argued Superman is just a cape; Clark is the hero who wears it. Smallville is the case for my belief in what makes Superman the greatest superhero in the world. The series followed a young Clark Kent's journey to becoming the savior of humanity. On the flip side, we also saw how one man could never escape his fate of becoming the world's most heinous criminal. Tragically, two friends who would wind up on opposite sides of good and evil. But have I built up the show into some kind of forgotten masterpiece? Or am I just drunk on kryptonite? Let's find out in this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten.
