John Mellencamp - I need a lover (1978) • TopPop
John (Cougar) Mellencamp (born October 7, 1951), previously known as Johnny Cougar, John Cougar, and John Cougar Mellencamp, is an American musician, singer-songwriter, painter, actor, and film director. He is known for his catchy, populist brand of heartland rock, which emphasizes traditional instrumentation. Mellencamp rose to fame in the 1980s while "honing an almost startlingly plainspoken writing style" that, starting in 1982, yielded a string of Top 10 singles, including "Hurts So Good", "Jack & Diane", "Crumblin' Down", "Pink Houses", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Small Town", "R.O.C.K. in the U.S.A.", "Paper in Fire", and "Cherry Bomb". He has amassed 22 Top 40 hits in the United States. In addition, he holds the record for the most tracks by a solo artist to hit number one on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, with seven. Mellencamp has been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning one. His latest album of original songs, Sad Clowns & Hillbillies, was released on April 28, 2017 to widespread critical acclaim. Mellencamp has sold over 30 million albums in the US and over 60 million worldwide. In this early TopPop video recorded in the Netherlands on May 20, 1978, he is 26 years old. Eruption ft. Precious Wilson - Leave A Light - 1978 • TopPop 03:59
Eruption ft. Precious Wilson - Leave A Light - 1978 • TopPop
Eruption were a British disco, R&B and soul recording act in the 1970s and 1980s. They are best known for their covers of Ann Peebles's "I Can't Stand the Rain" and Neil Sedaka's "One Way Ticket", which were big disco hits in 1978 and 1979. The band was formed in 1969 as a school band in the United Kingdom as Silent Eruption, and consisted of musicians of Caribbean origins. The group changed the name to Eruption in 1974. In 1975 Precious Wilson joined the band as a backing singer and they won the RCA Soul Search contest and their first single "Let Me Take You Back in Time" was released. The group didn't find a singer who could replace Lindel Leslie so backing singer Precious Wilson became the lead singer. In 1977 they went on the road in Germany where they were discovered by Hans-Jörg Mayer who worked as a talent scout for Frank Farian (the producer of Boney M.) Farian signed the group with the Germany-based Hansa Records and the band was the backing band and the support act for Boney M's first European tour. Their 'comeback' single "Party, Party" did well in 1977, but their cover of "I Can't Stand the Rain" released in December 1977 was an international hit, reaching No. 1 in Belgium and Australia, No. 5 in the UK Singles Chart and No. 18 in the US Billboard Hot 100. Afterwards, in the spring of 1978, "Party, party" was re-released and became a hit in the Benelux countries. Both songs were included in their first album, released in December 1977. It was followed by their second album titled Leave a Light, launched towards the end of 1978. The first single off the album, "Leave a Light", went largely unnoticed, but the second single, "One Way Ticket" (a cover of Neil Sedaka's song written by Jack Keller and Hank Hunter), catapulted them to the top of the charts (a UK No. 9 hit) Watch our great music videos ❯ https://goo.gl/feVLNN More TopPop? Kate Bush (Efteling) - original recording 1978 • TopPop 00:20
Kate Bush (Efteling) - original recording 1978 • TopPop
On 12 May 1978, Dutch broadcaster TROS broadcast a 20 minute Kate Bush television special, directed by Toppop director Rien van Wijk and recorded at the Dutch amusement park the Efteling. On 10 May 1978, the Efteling was ready to open the Haunted Castle, the most expensive attraction it had ever constructed, and they wanted to promote it as much as they could. Ton van der Ven, who designed the castle, appeared in a popular talk show and in April a documentary featuring the Haunted Castle was made by filmmaker Rien van Wijk, who was eager to shoot in the latest attraction before it officially opened. Kate, who just had a big hit with Wuthering Heights, was approached for a television special that would promote both Efteling and her songs. The special was filmed in April, a month before the official opening of the castle. This is the original broadcast of May 12, 1978. The original 16m film is lost; this is a copy of the uMatic version that is the only version left. The Efteling TV Special songs: • "Moving" was filmed in the square in front of the Haunted Castle • "Wuthering heights"; Kate can be seen inside the Haunted Castle. Among other things, a smoke machine was used. • "Them heavy people" was filmed at 3 locations; in the attic of the castle, at the entrance with the oriental spirit and outside in front of the entrance of the well that is part of the attraction 'The Indian water lilies'. • "The man with the child in his eyes" was filmed by the lake with gondolettes and swans • Strange Phenomena, has the double shot with the mirror image and was filmed in the castle's catacombs. • "The Kick Inside". Kate has gray hair in this shot and is lying in a boat surrounded by flowers on the lake and sailing away. This scene conjures up images of Elaine and The Lady of Shalott, classic poetic figures from the Arthurian legend. Catherine Bush CBE (born 30 July 1958) is an English singer, songwriter, and producer. She came to prominence in 1978, aged 19, when she topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks with her debut single "Wuthering Heights", becoming the first female artist to achieve a UK number one with a self-written song. She has since released 25 UK Top 40 singles, including the top-10 hits "The Man with the Child in His Eyes", "Babooshka", "Running Up That Hill". This is the original broadcast with all text cards without intermission exactly as it was originally broadcast May 12, 1978. This is different from the compilation we published earlier. Angel - Winter Song - 18-03-1978 • TopPop 03:38
Angel - Winter Song - 18-03-1978 • TopPop
Angel is an American glamrockband from Washington D.C. The band was formed in 1975 with members Punky Meadows (guitar), Mickie Jones (bass), Frank DiMino (vocals), Gregg Giuffria (keyboard) and Barry Brandt (drums). Their first musical attempts took place under the name Sweet Mama from Heaven. After a short while they changed their name to Angel, a tribute to Jimi Hendrix's song of the same name. The band played exclusively in white, which was supposed to be a contrast to Kiss. The band members also had an androgynous image, which was a hallmark of glamrock. After a tour the band released the album 'Helluva Band' (1976) and was voted best newcomer by music magazine Circus. They left Heart and Boston behind. The third album was eventually recorded with Eddie Kramer and released in 1977 under the title 'On Earth as It Is in Heaven'. With this album the band developed from a typical glam rock band to a hard rock band. In 1978 Angel managed to score at a radio hit in Germany. Their 'Winter song' reached # 3 of the radio hit parade WDR2 hit rally in January of the year. Winter Song reached # 20 in the Dutch Top 40 on 8 april 1978 This rare Toppop recording was first broadcast on 18 March 1978 Watch our great music videos ❯ https://goo.gl/feVLNN More TopPop?
