Sister Sledge is an American musical vocal group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Formed in 1971, the group consisted of sisters Debbie, Joni, Kim and Kathy Sledge. The siblings achieved international success at the height of the disco era. The year 1979 saw the release of their breakthrough album We Are Family, which peaked at number three on the US Album Chart and included the 1979 US top ten singles "He's the Greatest Dancer" and "We Are Family". A third single, "Lost in Music", reached the US top forty. "We Are Family" earned a Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. Today is Independence Day! The Fourth of July is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. To celebrate Independance day and also the freedom of speech and sex in the United States we have chosen this great anthem by the US Village People, one of the first LBGTQ forerunners in the USA. Village People was the creation of Jacques Morali, a French composer. Their singles YMCA and In The NavyIt became a big hit in the gay community, the reason for releasing it today. Morali built a group of dancers around singer Victor Willis to perform in clubs and videos. Morali met the first recruit, Felipe Rose (who claims indigenous American descent and dressed as a Native American), in a New York gay bar called the Anvil. Willis hand-picked Alex Briley (who initially appeared in nondescript costumes before switching to G.I. uniforms). The others were Mark Mussler (construction worker), Dave Forrest (cowboy), Lee Mouton (leatherman/biker), and Peter Whitehead (one of the group's early songwriters), who appeared on American Bandstand and in the video for the group's first hit, "San Francisco (You Got Me)". In the Navy" was released as the first single from their fourth studio album, Go West (1979) as a successor to YMCA. It was a number one hit in Canada, Belgium, Japan and the Netherlands, while reaching number two in Ireland, Norway and the UK. In 1994, a remix charted at number 36 in the UK. "In the Navy" was the last Top 10 hit for the group in the United States. Anita Ward (born December 20, 1957) is an American singer and musician. She is best known for her 1979 million-selling chart-topper "Ring My Bell". "Ring My Bell" is a 1979 disco song written by Frederick Knight. The song was originally written for then eleven-year-old Stacy Lattisaw, as a teenybopper song about kids talking on the telephone. When Lattisaw signed with a different label, Anita Ward was asked to sing it instead, and it became her only major hit. "Ring My Bell" went to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, the Disco Top 80 chart and the Soul Singles chart. It also reached number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. It also garnered Ward a nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance at the 1980 Grammy Awards. In the Netherlands the single reached no.2 in the Dutch Top 40 on August 11, 1979. Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, they would later move to New Bedford, Massachusetts. Milk & Honey was an Israeli pop group consisting of the permanent members Reuven Gvirtz, Yehuda Tamir, Shmulik Bilu. Together with Gali Atari, they represented Israel at the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest in Jerusalem. They had first won the Israeli song festival that was then the preselection for the song festival. With 'Hallelujah' they won the Eurovision Song festival and gave their country the second consecutive victory after 'Abanibi' of Izhar Cohen and The Alphabeta. Viola Mae Wilkerson (December 30, 1939 – May 6, 2009) was an American pop singer, best known for the 1979 UK Singles Chart number 8 hit and US U.S. Hot Dance Club Play number 52 hit, "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now". Other hits included further covers of the songs, "Both Sides Now" (number 35 UK) (1986), and "If You Could Read My Mind" (number 2 U.S. Hot Dance Club Play) (1980). Wills' first major break into the mainstream came in 1979 with her cover version of "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now" (the song's release date was May 14, 1979) which started a string of dance hits. All three of the songs landed Wills in the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles. In 1982, her cover of "Stormy Weather" peaked at number 4 in the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart. Later in 1983, the newly formed record label RVA (Robert Viola Ashmun), released a number of songs, including "Wall", "Space" and "If These Walls Could Speak". This single 'Gonna Get Along Without You Now' reached no. 7 in the Dutch Top 40 on December 22, 1979.
