Either that, or he magically reassembled the same cast and shot just a few new scenes for 1972’s “God is My Colt .45.” Large chunks of this film wound up in that one, including entire shootouts. The climatic shootout in this film, for instance, winds up appearing in the middle of the later film. Of the two, this one has a slightly more logical plot, a much larger role for pretty Kirsta Nell, and much less of villains Rast (O’Brien) and Shannon (Clerici). But there are also plenty of unintentionally funny moments, including the catfight between Nell and saloon girl Zelda (Sofia Kammara). Tracked by the vengeful Curly, Paco liberates villages, but is tempted by social banditry's treasures, which Kowalski revels in. Reviews: I recently got hold of the Japanese DVD print via ebay. This is of really high quality and I was amazed that this film is not more widely known or appreciated. What a brilliant film. In many ways it is similar to Companeros and if you liked that wonderful film you will also love this. The story is somewhat far-fetched but is very enjoyable and fast paced in a 'boys own' way. The machine gun makes its familiar appearance. Franco Nero, as always, delivers a superb performance and Jack Palance gives a very good performance as a very unpleasant killer. The music is brilliant and the duel in the bullring is incomparable and is perfectly choreographed to the wonderful music. If you are interested in westerns you have to see this film. Written by washboard via IMDb.com "The second collaboration of Sergio Corbucci, the Italian Western's most important director besides Sergio Leone, and Franco Nero, one of the genre's greatest actors, after the ingenious "Django" from 1966, "Il Mercenario", a movie set in the time of the Mexican revolution, and therefore late for a Western, is a must-see for every fan of the genre. Sergei Kowalski (Franco Nero) gets hired by short-tempered revolutionary Paco Roman (Tony Musante), in order to help his squad of unexperienced rebels with their campaign for a free Mexico. While Paco is a crook, but also an idealist, becoming more and more idealistic after his troop is joined by beautiful and idealistic Columba, a woman whose father was a revolutionary , the Polish is a typical anti-hero, witty and cool and somehow sympathetic, but mainly concerned on his own benefit. The acting is great, specially Franco Nero as the Polish, and Jack Palance's performance as one of the villains. Another villain is played by Eduardo Fajardo, who played the villainous Major Jackson in Django. The score of this movie, composed by Ennio Morricone, is just brilliant (how couldn't it), the cinematography is great as well as the locations. My favorite film by Corbucci is still the incomparably brilliant "Il Grande Silenzio" ("aka. "The Great Silence") of 1968, "Django" of 1966 being my second-favorite due to its immense entertainment- and cult-value. Maybe not quite as brilliant as "Il Grande Silenzio" and not quite as influential as "Django", "Il Mercenario" is nonetheless an exceptional Spaghetti Western with a great sense of humor that I would recommend to everybody, not only genre fans. 9 out of 10!" Reviews: "The only way someone could think this movie was not sensational is if their sense of humor was highly uncultivated or if they were just extremely immature. The asides make it clear this movie was made just for laughs. The characters names, the costumes, and the starring roles of such Hollywood heavyweights as James Caan, Stephanie Powers and Sammy Davis Jr. especially made this film hilarious on almost the same level as Blazing Saddles. My roommate and I pride ourselves in having a refined sense of taste and we enjoyed this film thoroughly. And we didn't even have to be intoxicated to laugh uproariously throughout the entire film. The last scene in which Stephanie powers remarks to James Caan that the only person he didn't kill was the camera man was the icing on the cake." The movie begins when some L.A. screen writer is going out to the desert to get an idea for a film. He ends up going to a ghost town in the desert and gets extorted by an older couple to see the "ghost town". The older woman promises to return is movie if he isn't satisfied by the tale she is tell of the "ghost town". The majority of the rest of the film is her narrative. This drifter runs into a Native American woman with her own grudge against this wealthy bully. The pair end up declaring war upon this small town, and come up with ingenious and funny ways to get revenge on the town bully. You have to like the idea. Things were really settled by fist, and it wasn't as if Jud McGraw wasn't getting the dickens beaten out of himself while fighting an opponenent. There is a funny role by Sammy Davis, Jr. as a fearless gunfighter. The gun really was power back then. The movie is rather violent and silly, but I do like the part about the L.A. screen writer looking for material in the desert. You really get an idea about life in the desert in this film. Towns spring up and disappear like they were never there." Director Enzo Castellari, working from a breezy script by Augusto Finocchi, Vittorio Metz, and Jose Maria Rodriguez, relates the blithely goofy story at a constant snappy pace, maintains a properly lighthearted tone throughout, and stages the rousing shoot-outs and plentiful rough'n'ready fisticuffs with real skill and aplomb. The broad slapstick gags are admittedly quite silly (the scenes with Kean brazenly impersonating a priest are especially funny), but still get big laughs just the same. Saxon, Sabato, and Wolff all make for engaging leads; their nice and natural on-screen chemistry keeps things bubbling along. Moreover, there are sturdy supporting contributions from the fetching Agata Flori as fierce spitfire Rosario and Leo Anchoriz as ruthless bandito gang leader Garrito. Longtime favorite character actor Victor Israel has a nifty bit as a chef. Both Alejandro Ulloa's crisp widescreen cinematography and Carlo Rusticello's jaunty, harmonic score do the trick.
