Além do programa de TV, a turma do Chaves também fazia várias turnês nacionais e internacionais, tinha vários produtos licenciados, e tal. O Chaves era um sucesso estrondoso e uma máquina de fazer dinheiro, quase duas décadas, né. Isso porque o Carlos foi namorado da Florinda Meza – a dona Florinda. Eles namoraram e terminaram enquanto todo mundo já trabalhava junto, e foi um namorico que não durou muito, mas segundo dizem foi o suficiente pro Chespirito aconselhar que aquilo não fosse a frente.

O Carlos e a Florinda terminaram, e um tempo depois o Chespirito e a Florinda começaram a namorar. Depois casaram e ficaram juntos até o fim da vida dele. Mas isso seria o suficiente pra abalar as estruturas do elenco e dar fim no seriado? Não, né. Segundo o Carlos Villagran, o Kiko, o que pegou MESMO foi um ciúme profissional.

O Carlos deu várias entrevistas ao longo dos anos dizendo que o problema foi que o Kiko ficou muito mais popular que o Chaves, que era o protagonista do programa, e por isso o Roberto Bolaños começou a cortar o Kiko, deixar um pouco mais de lado. Começou com o Kiko aparecendo em menos episódios, até que no final o Kiko saiu de vez da série no final de 1978.

E justamente esse fato arrastou uma série de outros acontecimentos que foram determinantes pro fim do Chaves. Quando o Kiko foi cortado, não foi só do programa Chespirito, ele foi cortado da Televisa – isso significa que ele não tinha mais como trabalhar no México. O Roberto, junto com a Televisa, forçaram a barra pra que o Carlos não pudesse mais fazer o personagem Kiko – e aí começou a primeira treta judicial.

Poucas semanas depois que o Kiko foi mandado embora, no início de 1979, o seu Madruga abandonou a série. Diferente do Carlos Villagran, o Ramón Valdez, o Seu Madruga, não foi cortado – ele saiu em solidariedade ao Kiko. Ele achou injusto o que fizeram com o Carlos.

Depois disso os dois, o Carlos e o Ramón, seguiram juntos num programa solo do Kiko – o seriado Ah que Quico. Por causa das questões judiciais, o Carlos teve que mudar o modo de escrever o nome do Kiko, a cor das roupas, e ele teve que se mudar do México pra fazer esse programa na Venezuela. Era aquele programa que o Seu Madruga tinha uma vendinha e o Quico trabalhava pra ele.

A história começa com a Dona Florinda brigando com as crianças – o Chaves e a Chiquinha – que estavam toda hora ocupando o tanque com brinquedos, dizendo pra eles que o tanque da vila era pra lavar roupa. Depois aparecem a Dona Clotilde e a Dona Neves e todas começam a brigar por quem vai usar o tanque primeiro.

Passa um tempinho e a Dona Florinda entra na vila com 2 entregadores e uma caixa misteriosa e nisso todo mundo fica curioso pra saber o que ela comprou. As vizinhas também percebem que nos dias seguintes que a Dona Florinda não aparecia mais pra lavar roupa no tanque, ela só saia pra pendurar as roupas no varal.

O professor Girafales chegou na vila e finalmente as cenas começaram a se passar dentro da casa da dona Florinda. A máquina era aquela tinha uns rolos em cima pra “torcer” a roupa, lembra? Devia ser super moderna pra época, lembrando que era final de 1979 e início de 1980. O episódio segue com muita curiosidade pra ver a máquina funcionando.

Acaba que todo mundo entra na casa da Dona Florinda e o professor faz uma demonstração da máquina funcionando, e num minuto de distração o Chaves se empolga e coloca todo o sabão lá dentro. Vira espuma e água pra todos os lados, e quando parecia que tudo ia ficar sob controle, o Chaves esmagou o chapéu do professor passando ele nos rolos da máquina.

Por fim, a Dona Florinda voltou a lavar as roupas no tanque. Ela disse que devolveu a máquina porque ocupava muito espaço em casa, e se arrependeu mais ainda depois que o Chaves passou a cafeteira dela pelos rolos. O curioso é que esse último episódio aconteceu sem nenhuma despedida – diferente de como foi com a série do Chapolin.

Mas foi o primeiro porque depois disso o Chaves deixou de ser uma série independente, mas continuou a ser exibido na TV. Nos anos seguintes, nas décadas de 80 e 90 o Chaves ficou dentro do Programa Chespirito – que tinha ESQUETES de Chaves, Chapolin, Chompiras, Doutor Chapatin, Chaparrón, e outros tantos personagens que o Roberto criou

Com isso, nos quadros do Chaves rolou uma redução de cenários clássicos como por exemplo, a vila - ela ficou praticamente só o pátio principal. Em 1991 veio o último episódios de Chaves na vila - que foi um remake do banho do Chaves. Teve também redução de elenco nas histórias, nem todo mundo aparecia em TODOS os episódios. Ali era mais uma linha descendente do Chaves e tudo indicava que ele tava perto de acabar. Nos últimos 3 meses de 1991 o Chaves saiu da grade do programa Chespirito, e só voltou perto do natal com esquetes nas duas últimas semanas do ano.

E em 1992 tiveram só mais 8 episódios de Chaves. Todos eles na escola e eram remakes de histórias clássicas – a do sanduiche de presunto do Nhonho, da prova de desenhos, aula de higiene, aula de música, aula de geografia, a aula de prevenção de acidentes... Lembrando que era 1992, nessa época o Roberto Gomes Bolaños já tinha passado dos 60 anos – esse fato é muito importante.

O Roberto começou a fazer o Chaves lá pelos 40 anos de idade, e ele era tão brilhante que fazia a gente esquecer que ele era um homem maduro interpretando um menino de 8 anos. Mas aos 60 anos já tava difícil convencer – o rosto e o corpo dele mudaram bastante, ele perdeu agilidade, o que é normal. Por isso ia ficando cada vez mais insustentável continuar com o personagem.

E o último episódio de todos foi a esquete da aula de inglês – que era um remake curtinho do tempo clássico da série. Esse episódio se passa todo na escolinha. Os principais alunos ali são o Chaves, a Pópis, a Chiquinha e o Godínez. As piadas são na maioria baseadas nas trabalhadas dos alunos com a tradução de palavras pro inglês.

Daí o professor pergunta então como é professor em inglês. O Chaves se levanta todo confiante e responde teacher. O professor fica satisfeito e emenda a pergunta: como é Professora em inglês? Aí o professor explica que a palavra teacher não tem gênero, então tanto faz professor ou professora. Então o Chaves confirma que entendeu.

Eu acho engraçado até hoje, essas piadas não envelhecem, não é verdade? O Girafales olha então com uma cara de tacho e fim. E essa foi literalmente a última cena que encerrou toda a jornada do Chaves na TV. Não teve despedida nem nenhum indício que o público estaria vendo a última produção do Chaves. O programa Chespirito continuou por mais alguns anos depois disso, mas sem o Chaves.

O curioso é que parar de vez com o Chaves foi uma decisão que o Roberto Gomes Bolaños tomou sozinho – os outros atores do elenco só souberam depois que o quadro já tinha sido cortado. Roberto started playing Chavo when he was 40 years old, and he was so brilliant that he made us forget that he was a mature man playing an 8-year-old boy. But at the age of 60 it was already difficult to convince – his face and body changed a lot, he lost agility, which is normal. That's why it was becoming increasingly unsustainable to continue with the character.

And the last episode ever was the English class skit – which was a short remake of the show's classic time. This episode takes place at school. The main students there are Chavo, Pópis, Chilindrina and Godínez. The jokes are mostly based on the students' work with translating words into English.

Like, translating amarelo to amarellow, menino is boy and menina is bóia, azul marinho is blue marinho... these jokes that we had already heard. This skit is only 8 minutes long, and at the end of the confusion of this English class, Chavo asks the teacher to ask him how to say teacher in English, because he knew that one.

Then the teacher asks how to say Professor in English. Chavo gets up all confident and answers teacher. The teacher is satisfied and amends the question: how do I say Professora in English? Then the teacher explains that the word Professor has no gender, so it doesn't matter. Then Chavo confirms that he understood.

I think it's funny to this day, these jokes don't get old, do they? The Girafales then looks with a face of pot and end. And that was literally the last scene that ended Chavo's entire journey on TV. There was no farewell or any indication that the public would be seeing Chavo' last production.

The Chespirito program continued for a few more years after that, but without Chavo. The curious thing is that stopping Chavo for good was a decision that Roberto Gomes Bolaños made alone – the other actors in the cast only found out after the frame had already been cut. Of course, this generated discussions, fights, legal disputes with some actors who wanted to continue working with the characters, such as Maria Antonieta de las Nieves, Chilindrina...

But in addition to his physical part, and the other actors who played children, the Roberto also justified the end of Chavo with the following: they needed to stop while the public still liked it. All the actors were getting older and as it was getting harder to maintain suspension of disbelief, from then on the show would go downhill, and that would be disrespectful to the audience.

It was better then to stop while the fans still had affection for the characters. The curious thing is that none of the 2 times that Chavo ended – either as its own series or within the Chespirito program – there was never an official farewell. And maybe that was a good thing, at least for the fans.

There was no goodbye, and thinking about it, this was going to be very melancholy for a series that won over children so much, a series of humor that only gave good vibes.
