Documentaire over de geschiedenis van het legendarische muziekprogramma Toppop, in de jaren zeventig en tachtig een enorm succes op de Nederlandse televisie. Het lijkt nu bijna onvoorstelbaar, maar in de seventies en eighties reisden alle grote wereldsterren af naar Nederland voor een optreden in Toppop. Van Queen tot Whitney Houston en van Michael Jackson tot David Bowie en Elton John: allemaal waren ze te gast in dit unieke muziekprogramma. Ook voor Nederlandse artiesten was Toppop echter een must. Billy Preston - I'm Never Gonna Say Goodbye • TopPop
William Everett Preston (September 2, 1946 – June 6, 2006) was an American musician whose work encompassed R&B, rock, soul, funk, and gospel. Preston was a top session keyboardist in the 1960s, during which he backed artists such as Little Richard, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Rev. James Cleveland and the Beatles. He went on to achieve fame as a solo artist, with hit singles such as "That's the Way God Planned It", the Grammy-winning "Outa-Space", "Will It Go Round in Circles", "Space Race", "Nothing from Nothing" and "With You I'm Born Again". Additionally, Preston co-wrote "You Are So Beautiful", which became a number 5 hit for Joe Cocker. The song "I'm Never Gonna Say Goodbye" was used for the Ed Asner/Jodie Foster film O'Hara's Wife and is featured on his album 'Pressin' On', his fifteenth studio album released in 1982. Labelle was an American all-female singing group who were a popular vocal group of the 1960s and 1970s. The group was formed after the disbanding of two rival girl groups in the area around Philadelphia and Trenton, the Ordettes and the Del-Capris, forming as a new version of the former group, then later changing their name to the Blue Belles (later Bluebelles). The founding members were Patti LaBelle (formerly Patricia Holt), Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash. "Lady Marmalade" is a song written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan. The song is famous for its sexually suggestive chorus of "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)?", which translates into English as "Do you want to sleep with me (tonight)?". The song first became a popular hit when it was recorded in 1974 by the American girl group Labelle. Labelle held the number-one spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for one week, and also topped the Canadian RPM national singles chart. Taja Sevelle - Love Is Contagious • TopPop
"Love Is Contagious" is the debut single by American singer Taja Sevelle, released in 1987. The song was taken from her eponymous debut album, released by Paisley Park Records. It is Sevelle's only major chart hit, reaching number 7 on the UK Singles Chart in early 1988. Taja Sevelle (born Nancy Richardson) is an American singer and songwriter, best known for her 1987 single, "Love Is Contagious" and for the non-profit organization Urban Farming, which she founded in 2005. Sevelle signed a recording contract with Prince's Paisley Park Records in 1987.[3] She also released her self-titled debut album that year, and would go on to release two more studio albums on other labels, 1991's Fountains Free and 1997's Toys of Vanity. Only two of the songs she recorded were written or co-written by Prince: "Wouldn't You Love to Love Me?" and "If I Could Get Your Attention", both from her debut album. She was first featured on Prince and the Revolution's 1985 album 'Around the World in a Day', singing backing vocals on the song "The Ladder". The single 'Love Is Contagious' reached #7 in the UK Top 100 and #8 in the Dutch Top 40. Stretch - Why Did You Do It • TopPop
Stretch were a 1970s British rock band that grew from the collaboration between Elmer Gantry (real name Dave Terry) and Kirby (real name Graham) Gregory. Gantry had been the frontman of Elmer Gantry's Velvet Opera. Kirby had been a member of Curved Air. The band was put together in 1974 with help from Fleetwood Mac manager Clifford Davis and drummer Mick Fleetwood to perform as Fleetwood Mac on a US tour because the existing Fleetwood Mac were not in a position to fulfil outstanding contractual obligations. However, Fleetwood did not join the tour as planned, and later denied any knowledge or involvement, and partway through the tour it became obvious to audiences that there was no original member of Fleetwood Mac in the band, and the tour collapsed. Bass player Paul Martinez claimed, "Mick Fleetwood pulled out at the last minute claiming not to know who we were! Stretch rose from the ashes of this debacle, and soon had a No. 16 hit single in November 1975 with "Why Did You Do It?” the lyric of which was a direct attack on Mick Fleetwood for his failure to join the band on the ill-fated US tour. In the official video for the record bass player Paul Martinez wore a traditional keffiyeh head-dress. Besides bass player Martinez, guitarist Kirby and Jim Russell on drums and tambourine, the single featured electric guitar by Hiroshi Kato and horns by Bud Beadle, Chris Mercer, Mick Eve, Mike Bailey and Ron Carthy.
