Dr. Hook - When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman (1979)• TopPop
Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show (shortened to Dr. Hook in 1975) was an American rock band, formed in Union City, New Jersey. They enjoyed considerable commercial success in the 1970s with hit singles including "Sylvia's Mother", "The Cover of 'Rolling Stone'" (both 1972), "Only Sixteen" (1975), "A Little Bit More" (1976), "Sharing the Night Together" (1978), "When You're in Love with a Beautiful Woman" (1979), "Better Love Next Time" (1979), and "Sexy Eyes" (1980). In addition to their own material, Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show performed songs written by the poet Shel Silverstein. The founding core of the band consisted of George Cummings, Ray Sawyer (from Alabama), and Billy Francis (born William Allen Francis, Jr. in Sacramento, California; January 16, 1942 – May 23, 2010), who had worked together in a band called the Chocolate Papers. They played the southern, eastern, and mid-western United States before breaking up. Cummings, who moved to New Jersey with the plan of forming a new band, brought Sawyer to rejoin him. They then took on future primary vocalist, New Jersey native Dennis Locorriere, initially as a bass player. Francis returned to be the new band's keyboardist. Cummings named the new band "Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show: Tonic for the Soul." The "Hook" name was inspired by Sawyer's eyepatch and a reference to Captain Hook of the Peter Pan fairy tale, although, humorously, Captain Hook was neither a doctor nor wore an eyepatch. Ray Sawyer had lost his right eye in a near-fatal car crash in Oregon in 1967, and thereafter always wore an eyepatch. The eyepatch led some to believe that Sawyer was 'Dr. Hook'. When anyone asked the band which one of them was 'Dr Hook' they always directed everyone to the bus driver. Jeane Manson (born 1950 in Cleveland, Ohio) is an American model, singer, and actor. After being photographed for Playboy magazine's Playmate of the Month in August 1974, she moved to Europe and appeared in several films, including 'Bons Baisers de Hong Kong' (1975). The following year, she became known for the song 'Avant de nous dire adieu'. In 1979 she represented Luxembourg in the Eurovision Song Contest with the song 'J'ai déjà vu ça dans tes yeux'. 'Avant de nous dire adieu' was written by Michel Mallory and Jean Renard. This single reached #12 in the Dutch Top 40 in the long hot summer of 1976. Dutch duo that consisted of Jetty Weels and Paul Guldenaar. The only hit that the duo scored was 'I'm Gonna Get Married', a cover of the 1959 American hit of the same name by Lloyd Price. Jetty Weels was replaced after two singles by Annet Hesterman. This song reached # 17 on the Dutch Top 40 on 5 April 1975. After the breakup of Sacha & Paul, Paul Guldenaar made two singles in the years 1977 and 1978 under the name Paul Ellis. In 1979 he joined the group Tennis. Charles Aznavour - Yesterday, When I Was Young • TopPop
Yesterday Charles Aznavour passed away. To honour him we place this video, one of his greatest hits and one of his most popular compositions, on the TopPop channel. May he rest in peace. This song ‘Yesterday When I Was Young’ was originally written by Aznavour with the French title ‘Hier Encore’. It was released in September 1964 but became a worldwide hit in 1971. The English-language lyrics, written by Herbert Kretzmer, tell of a man reflecting on his life. He recounts how he had wasted his youth on self-centered pursuits, and that, now that he is older, he will not be able to do all that he had planned; this implies that he may be close to his impending death. This TV recording was made at a rehearsal in theatre Bellevue in Amsterdam for a Dutch TV show called ‘Muziek Is Troef’ broadcast by AVRO Television on 19 January 1971. The song entrered the Dutch Top 40 on 19 dec 1970 and reached # 3 in the Top 40 in January 1971. It reached #6 in the Belgian charts. The song has been performed and recorded by many international stars, such as Bing Crosby, Shirley Bassey, Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield, Roy Clark, Mel Torme, Lena Horne, Andy Williams, Jimmy Durante, Bobby Bare, Al Martino, The Peanuts, Glen Campbell, Julio Iglesias, Eddy Mitchell, Dean Reed, Johnny Mathis, Marc Almond, Patricia Kaas, Matt Monro, Lena Martell, Nora Aunor, Blossom Dearie and Amanda Lear. According to Billboard, more than 90 versions of the song were recorded before 1972. Charles Aznavour is considered one of the greatest chansonniers of all time. His seventy-year career produced some 294 albums and 1.400 songs, including the classics 'La Bohème' and 'She'. Aznavour scored hits in the sixties and seventies in the Netherlands such as 'For me ... formidable', 'Yesterday When I Was Young', 'The Old Fashioned Way', 'She' and 'Mes emmerdes'. Despite his high age, Aznavour still performed, for example in early March in an almost sold out AFAS Live in Amsterdam. The singer was confronted more often with his fragile, physical condition in the past six months. A couple of weeks ago, on April 20, 2021, singer Les McKeown of the Bay City Rollers died. McKeown was born on 12 November 1955, Edinburgh, Scotland). To commemorate him, we highlight this video of one of the Rollers biggest hits. The Bay City Rollers are a Scottish pop rock band known for their worldwide teen idol popularity in the 1970s. They have been called the "tartan teen sensations from Edinburgh" and "the first of many acts heralded as the 'biggest group since the Beatles'". The group's line-up had many changes over the years, but the classic line-up during its heyday included guitarists Eric Faulkner and Stuart Wood, singer Les McKeown, bassist Alan Longmuir, and drummer Derek Longmuir. The current lineup (since 2018) includes original guitarist Stuart "Woody" Wood, singer Ian Thomson, bassist Marcus Cordock, and drummer Jamie McGrory. The Bay City Rollers have sold 120 million records worldwide. "Bye, Bye, Baby (Baby Goodbye)" is a popular song written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio, a member of The Four Seasons, whose version of the song made it to No. 1 in Canada and No. 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100 in 1965. The Bay City Rollers version made it to no 1 in the UK, sold a million copies and hit No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for six weeks from March 1975. It ended the year as the UK's top-selling single. In Australia and Ireland it also reached to no. 1. In the Netherlands it reached to #11 in the Dutch Top 40. In the film 'Love Actually' the song is played by Daniel (Liam Neeson) at his wife's funeral, and by the DJ (Junior Simpson) at Juliet (Keira Knightley) and Peter's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) wedding reception.
