O álbum "A Single Man" foi lançado em 16 de Outubro de 1978 e é o primeiro álbum para o qual Gary Osborne substituiu Bernie Taupin como letrista. * "Song for Guy" é uma música instrumental e é a faixa de encerramento do álbum. * Sobre essa canção Elton John disse: "Enquanto eu estava escrevendo essa música em um domingo, eu me imaginei flutuando no espaço e olhando para o meu próprio corpo. Eu estava me imaginando morrendo. Morbidamente obcecado com esses pensamentos, escrevi esta canção sobre a morte. No dia seguinte, me disseram que Guy Burchett, nosso mensageiro de 17 anos, (funcionário da gravadora) havia sido tragicamente morto num acidente com sua moto no dia anterior. Seus programas semanais de televisão e especiais sazonais foram transmitidos por todo o mundo. No memorial oficial da revista RCA Records Billboard, sua vida foi resumida nessas poucas palavras: "50 anos de música e uma vida bem vivida. Um exemplo para todos." * Nasceu em Canonsburg, Pensilvânia, cerca de 32 km a sudoeste de Pittsburgh. Ele foi o sétimo de dez filhos e o primeiro filho americano. Os pais emigraram para os EUA em 1910 da cidade Abruzzesa de Palena, Itália.
