What Are The Best Martin Scorsese Films? 07:51
What Are The Best Martin Scorsese Films?
Martin Scorsese is considered by many to be the greatest living director, and here at JoBlo, we’re inclined to agree. For over fifty years, Scorsese has regularly churned out masterpieces at a genuinely dizzying rate. Has he ever made a legitimately bad film? Even his failures, like 1976’s New York New York, are worth watching and occasionally brilliant. So-called lesser efforts like After Hours are actually quite brilliant upon re-examination, but the question remains - what are Martin Scorsese’s best films? Truth be told, this is an impossible question to answer. When you’re working on the level of Scorsese, it’s hard to quantify what his best work is, as so many of his films are brilliant that a case could be made for everything from Mean Streets, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Last Temptation of Christ, Silence and beyond. Thus, we here at JoBlo are doing something a little different by presenting our ten favorite Scorsese movies. To note, Killers of the Flower Moon is not included - not because it doesn’t qualify (you can read our rave review here), but rather because Scorsese’s movies, in our opinion, need to be viewed multiple times to see how they fit in the canon. You can watch our favourite Martin Scorsese movies via the video embedded above, but make sure to let us know in the comments if you agree or disagree with our occasionally controversial picks. Campfire tales. Town legends. Ghost stories. Whatever you want to call them, they exist as a way to tell stories from one generation to the next. WTF Happened to Dustin Hoffman? 17:53
WTF Happened to Dustin Hoffman?
Of all the actors to get caught up in the #MeToo movement, perhaps one of the most surprising was Dustin Hoffman. Back in 2017, when the actor was fresh off of delivering one of his finest latter-day performances in The Meyerowitz Stories, the actor was confronted (some say ambushed) at a 20th-anniversary screening of Wag the Dog by comedian John Oliver, who questioned him about accusations of inappropriate behaviour from thirty years prior on the set of Death of a Salesman. The story went viral, and soon a story about Hoffman’s treatment of Meryl Streep on the set of Kramer vs Kramer also got renewed play, much to Streep’s dismay, who said Hoffman had apologized years earlier, and she accepted that. In the years since, Hoffman’s career has been low-key, with him only showing up in a few indie and international films, which is a significant comedown for a man who was always considered one of the greatest actors of his generation. Indeed, his filmography is tough to match, with him acting in decades of classics, including The Graduate, Little Big Man, Straw Dogs, Marathon Man, Tootsie, Rain Man, and so many more. Should a few instances of inappropriate behaviour be enough to tarnish his legacy? We dig into his life and career in this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, written by Mathew Plale and edited, narrated and produced by Taylor James Johnson. Do you think Dustin Hoffman’s legacy has been marred? Let us know in the comments! What Happened to To Live and Die in L.A? 14:40
What Happened to To Live and Die in L.A?
To Live and Die in L.A. is considered a classic now, but this wasn't always the case. When he died this summer, a lot of director William Friedkin’s movies got new life as film fans dug into this filmography. Looking over his body of work, one of the interesting things to note is that he directed four films that could justifiably be called masterpieces, but only two of them were successful. There was The French Connection and The Exorcist, both of which raked in huge box office and are considered classics. But, there were also two flops that he made that are just as good as those films, one of which is 1977’s Sorcerer, and the other is 1985’s Secret Service thriller To Live and Die in L.A., which we’re digging into in this episode of WTF Happened to This Movie. The film stars William Petersen (long before CSI) as a Secret Service agent after the counterfeiter who killed his partner. While that premise sounds old hat, Friedkin’s execution is anything but. Despite being our “hero,” Friedkin’s cop character is anything but heroic, while Willem Dafoe, as the cop-killing bad guy, is shown to be somewhat sympathetic. In his pursuit of his prey, Petersen’s character becomes a full-on criminal, dragging his young partner (John Pankow pre-Mad About You) into the abyss. To Live and Die in L.A. contains the most realistic counterfeit bill-making ever put to screen, as well as a car chase that arguably beats Friedkin’s hair-raising pursuit in The French Connection. Plus, it’s all scored by an evocative score by New Wave band Wang Chung. It’s a masterpiece, but the making of the film was fraught for Friedkin, and after it came out, he’d never be given carte blanche in the same way again. So, WTF Happened to To Live and Die in L.A.? WTF Happened to SINBAD? 22:28
WTF Happened to SINBAD?
If you’re a child of the nineties, chances are you grew up loving Sinbad. Also known as David Atkins, Sinbad began his comedy career as a contestant on Star Search before nabbing his breakout role on the Cosby Show spin-off, A Different World, where he played Coach Walter Oakes; he served as a mentor to the main cast, who all played students at the fictional Hillman College. His distinctive look made him instantly identifiable, and it wasn’t long before he started showing up in movies, with roles in Necessary Roughness and Coneheads. His career was unusual because most people went to TV after their movie careers cooled down. For Sinbad, it was the opposite. His solo TV show, The Sinbad Show, was a flop, but shortly afterwards, his movie career went into high gear, with him appearing in a string of hit movies. His biggest hit was Houseguest opposite the late Phil Hartman, but he also co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Jingle All The Way and made a well-received Disney film called First Kid. And no, we did not star in Kazaam (blame the Mandela Effect for that one). Oddly, after three successful films, Sinbad’s career cooled around 2000, and no one knows why. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into the inexplicable cooling of this terrific comic actor’s career, as well as shining a light on some of the health challenges he’s faced as the beloved star recovers from a debilitating stroke. Donnie Darko: What's It Really About? 19:37
Donnie Darko: What's It Really About?
Friends, it’s that time of year. The weather is getting colder, the nights are getting spookier, and my watchlist is getting weirder. Among the classics for Halloween movie nights is Richard Kelly’s directorial debut that both shocked attendees of Sundance in 2001, as well as risen to the ranks of the coveted title “Cult Classic” in the more than 20 years since it was made. It’s a movie that resonates with teenagers on a level that few movies have in the past couple of decades and on its own it stands as a crowd-pleasing adventure that is sure to intrigue you as much as it confuses you. I’m talking, of course, about the time traveling, water bending, and deliciously disturbing story of Donnie Darko. Ah, Donnie Darko. When I was 13 or 14, my English teacher on this movie on for our class on the last day of school, and I don’t remember why he did that, but I do remember that this movie REALLY made an impression on me. I borrowed the movie from a friend that night and watched it again. Most of my intrigue came from the incredibly complex plot mixed with the feeling of a John Hughes movie gone emo. It was exactly what 14-year-old me was into. And in the years since, I’ve seen this movie at least once a year and many times more than that- and every time I’ve tried to describe this movie to someone who hasn’t seen it, I’ve found myself romanticizing the movies tone and angsty mood over the deeper themes and overall plot- and that’s because, as we all know, this is one of those movies that you kind of just have to see. So, today’s episode is going to be a dark trip down memory lane as we re-awaken my inner-teenager and figure out once and for all- What's Donnie Darko Really About? Dumb and Dumber: What's The Best Scene in Jim Carrey's Funniest Film? 15:33
Dumb and Dumber: What's The Best Scene in Jim Carrey's Funniest Film?
Dumb and Dumber is probably Jim Carrey’s funniest film. While The Truman Show, Man on the Moon and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind might be better all-around movies, in terms of his comedies, nothing quite beats Peter and Bobby Farrelly’s debut. While Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask arguably made more of an impact on pop culture, both of those films are dated in ways that Dumb and Dumber isn’t. Jim Carrey is sensational as Lloyd Christmas, a love-struck limo driver pursuing the object of his affections, Lauren Holly’s Mary Swanson, to Aspen. As hilarious as he is, he’s matched by Jeff Daniels, who plays his best pal, Harry, who accompanies him on his trip in their iconic Mutt Cutts van. The road comedy is scored with a classic alt-rock nineties soundtrack, and some of the rude jokes, which include love-lorn truck drivers, headless parakeets and the most annoying sound ever made, are unforgettable. By what truly is the funniest scene in Dumb and Dumber? In this episode of Scene Breakdown, our host Kier Gomes makes the case that it’s Harry and Lloyd’s grand entrance into Aspen high society, while decked out in their iconic three-piece party suits, that makes the film a classic. In this episode, he takes you beat by beat through the masterfully directed scene while also discussing how the movie arguably cemented Carrey’s superstardom, making him the biggest comedy star of the nineties. What Happened to Young Guns 2? 19:36
What Happened to Young Guns 2?
One of the hardest things to do in Hollywood is to make a highly anticipated movie sequel that lives up to the original, much less surpasses it. But if you had a loaded six-shooter pressed to your temple and had to answer as quickly and honestly as possible, what would you say the all-time best movie Western sequel happens to be? Sergio Leone’s Dollars trilogy certainly comes to mind as the most sterling example. Yet, in terms of a Western that uses historical events to tell a compelling biographical tale, it’s hard to eclipse the blistering entertainment value of Young Guns II - a movie that continues the saga of William H. Bonney, aka, Billy the Kid, and his gunslinging compatriots, The Regulators, following their valiant efforts fighting in the Lincoln County War. Released two years after the original, Young Guns II became nearly as successful as the original in terms of box office sales and critical reception. While some creative liberties were taken to increase the dramatic effect of the story, like its popular predecessor, Young Guns II largely stuck to historical facts regarding The Regulators’ role in avenging John Tunstall and defeating notorious lawman Pat Garrett. Now that we’ve already gotten to the bottom of Young Guns’ production history, we’re back by popular demand to do the same for the scintillating sequel. Regulators, mount up…it’s time to get this party started and figure out What Happened to Young Guns II!
