Released for Commodore Amiga and MS-DOS PCs in 1993, I first attempted to record Theatre of Death back in 2013, but abandoned the notion soon after discovering how damn difficult the game could be.

Now, six years later, I decided to finish what I started, bringing you a complete longplay of this flawed RTS title.

Despite sharing similar DNA to Sensible Software's Cannon Fodder, Theatre of Death feels a lot rougher around the edges. Both games are exceedingly difficult, but much of the challenge with TOD comes from frustrating controls, aggravating troop AI with astounding propensity to get stuck on obstacles and to blunder into electric fences and shark-infested lakes. It wasn't until a good 45 minutes into playing that I finally worked out how to reload guns in the ammo dumps, and that was only after reading the help sheet that accompanied the game.

By and large, succeeding in each mission is less about coordination and strategy, instead relying on your ability to out-range enemies and keeping your mouse reticule on target. Attack choppers have a weapon range slightly larger than a whole screen in length, so securing one or more or these gives you a serious advantage.

There are some great ideas here; it's just a shame that they don't all gel together.
