I was in my last year of high school when Aja was released. I had been following Steely Dan for years..."Reeling In The Years" was the first, but "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" and "Do It Again" became summer favorites of mine. They were primarily a studio band, perfectionists who crafted jazz funk concoctions that tended towards dance pop. I first heard "Peg" on American Bandstand, which was always on Saturdays around noon or so, I was a rabid fan of Dick Clark. There is a documentary film on the making of "Aja" that tears apart each layer and track to expose the intricacies of harmonies, be it vocal or instrumental. Its intensely fascinating to hear how each individual part makes up the finished product.
