Wrecked cars and jackknifed lorries lay abandoned as emergency workers rummaged through the wreckage to free trapped motorists in photos showing the devastation left on southbound Interstate 41 near Neenah on Sunday. Science teacher Andrew Schefelker, 30, was killed and 71 people were injured in the smash on Sunday as gale-force winds and blizzards battered Wisconsin. Sheriff John Matz said first responders executed a 'mass casualty plan' in the aftermath of the pileup. Matz revealed that during a seven-hour period on Sunday, his office received 772 emergency calls. Nicole Adrian and Susan Brugger, who were involved in the crash, told WMSN-TV they were like 'sitting duck' as they lay stranded on the highway waiting for help to arrive. 'We came around a corner, and it was just a total white wall of snow. You couldn't see five feet in front of you,' Ms Adrian said. Motorists were told to stay off the roads in cities across the top third of the state as 60mph winds and blizzards made travel practically impossible.
