MTV Unplugged in New York was released on November 1, 1994, almost seven months after Kurt Cobain' s death. The album features a mostly acoustic performance and was recorded at Sony Music Studios in Hell's Kitchen on November 18, 1993.

The show aired on December 16, 1993. During the show, Nirvana also played covers of songs by the Vaselines, David Bowie, Lead Belly and Meat Puppets. They were joined by rhythm guitarist Pat Smear and cellist Lori Goldston for several songs, and Meat Puppets members Cris and Curt Kirkwood for three songs.
