Does Cordyceps grow on bugs? Is it vegan?

That’s a question we get a lot. Especially from people who follow a strict vegan diet but still want to experience the medicinal benefits of Cordyceps mushrooms. ⠀

Cordyceps “sinensis” does indeed grow on bugs. It parasitizes the larvae of ghost moths and eventually grows out of the head of a dead caterpillar high in the mountains of Tibet. That’s why it is sometimes called “caterpillar fungus”. It’s actually pretty creepy. ⠀

Cordyceps sinensis is a medicinal mushroom with a long history in traditional chinese medicine. Since it is rare in the wild and can’t yet be cultivated, it fetches an insanely high price… upwards of $1000/gram. ⠀

That also means that any supplement containing “C. sinensis” fruiting body is either using mycelium, or not understanding what is in the package. ⠀

Luckily, there is another species- Cordyceps militaris- which can be cultivated quite easily and contains the same beneficial compounds as it’s more expensive cousin.⠀
