As far as 1980s classics go, it's hard to think of three more influential films than Escape from New York, The Terminator and Top Gun. John Carpenter's Escape From New York reinvented Kurt Russell, who was then best known as a child star for Disney, into the decade's greatest anti-hero. At the same time, James Cameron's The Terminator made Arnold Schwarzenegger into a massive action star, introducing perhaps the greatest cinematic one-liner of all time, "I'll Be Back." And then, Tony Scott's Top Gun, with its MTV aesthetic, helped reinvent the decade's cinematic language, which is still imitated nearly 40 (!) years later.
