Poor Swamp Thing doesn’t get much respect. While other superheroes like Batman and Superman have had leading men tripping over themselves to try on the cape and (in Batman’s case) the cowl, poor Swamp Thing is usually played by a stuntman or suffers the indignity of being pure CGI. While things might change for Swamp Thing in James Gunn’s new DCU, until then he seems doomed to remain one of DC’s most obscure heroes on the big screen.
This wasn’t always the case though. In fact, Swamp Thing was one of the first DC heroes to get his own movie, with no less than A Nightmare on Elm Street creator Wes Craven directing a Swamp Thing movie back in 1982. Starring Dick Durock as Swamp Thing (with a young Ray Wise playing him in human form), it was enough of a hit to spawn a campy sequel in 1989 that brought back Durock and the movie’s villain, Louis Jourdan’s Anton Arcane, and even featured Heather Locklear as a love interest. But, it’s largely been forgotten - until now.
Check out this video all about Swamp Thing’s big screen adventures, which is narrated by Niki Minter, written by Emilie Black, and edited by Victoria Verduzco.
